if you want you can use small balloons as well . the air in front of the bullet blows it away as it exits the barrel , or so i have been told i have tried it and never noticed a bit of difference in accuracy
No effect whatsoever. Petzal will confirm that as well. I have tested it at the range myself and there is absolutely no effect for one ply of plastic electrical tape over the muzzle. Not true for dirt and snow.
I HAVE THE ANSWER. It was done in an issue of outdoor life. The result was startling, in the high end varmint rifle they were using, not only did the tape not effect the accuracy, it actually improved it (by a little). They found that the tape was pushed off by the pressure in front of the bullet before the bullet came out and that it created slightly more pressure behind the bullet as well- so do it, you have nothing to lose.
I've used electrical tape for years in the deep snow and have never had any sort of problem. I believe that we should all do this hunting in snow or mud. Both of these things in a bbl. is a potential disaster.
In Alaska has the nastiest and snitiest weather conditions including volcanic dust. The bigger the bore the more moisture and dirt etc will get into the muzzle and down the bore. I use electrical tape all the time and even at 700 yard the tape didn’t affect it especially on my M1A with the flash suppressor fully covered with electrical tape!
This is pretty interesting... I have never done or heard of either but it seems like a pretty good idea(with the exception of the rubber hose??? - no offense). I'll have to try it out. Good tips guys.
Thanks for all your advice, hjohn429 dont get what you mean by rubber hose though if you would clarify that it would be great. thanks everyone i was wondering if it would affect it at all because my grandpa and dad put it on their barrels to keep out snow, but i never had so i will try it this year
Well i had never heard of hose or balloons but balloons sound like a great idea but i dont know about the hose. I dont know how you mean to do it. Explain?
I found some industrial sheaths that are made to fit over fingers. Those are beige. T/C also make black one sized for muzzleloader barrels. Yes, they look like miniature condoms.
Not a good idea and even if it did worked, the fragments of the hose is dangerous!
Did you know a 30-06 with a 150 grain bullet with a chamber pressure of 52,000psi has a muzzle pressure of 12,000 at 24 inches? If a tire blows up sending fragment able to injure somebody around 100psi, just think what 12,000 would do!
A rubber hose not only deflect the bullet, but will damage the bullet!
I've used electrical tape for years and it works great. I've never noticed any change of impact point. Electrical tape is easy to carry in your pocket (especially that last 1/3 roll) so if you shoot, you can re-cover the barrel when it cools off again.
The tape prevents a lot of difficulty in the field. It's cheap and easy to use, there is no down-side to this equation.

I have used electrical tape on my hunting rifle and the plastic muzzle cap on my issued m4/m16. I have never noticed a difference in the trajectory of the bullet. They blow off before the bullet ever gets to the muzzle.
Electrical tape, masking tape, transparent tape - they are all the same. I've used them all. Doesn't affect the performance, whatsoever. One hunting trip I experienced was, I slipped and my rifle barrel got stuck in at least 8 inches of mud. Figure it out if I hadn't taped the barrel. That would have been the end of my hunt. Needless to say, I got meat out of the woods. I have slipped in many of my hunts before, and most of the time, I sacrifice my body and cradle my rifle going down. Now, that's a true hunter.

I heard it keeps dirt out and it does not affect accuracy. Good luck!

i would assume electric tape could affect vibrations of the barrel. maybe not though
not enough to matter
i like the balloon idea a little better. Electrical take is pretty heavy. I've never tried either.
Over in the sandbox, we had hard plastic cap-type covers- different type of shootin' of course, ........I'd go with the balloon myself.
....follow up- oh, make sure it's the little water-balloon type.......you'd get laughed at if you used one made for making balloon animals!

If the tape caused a slightly more pressure behind the bullet, wouldn't that change my point of impact at 700 yards?
It would!
You don't even need electrical tape, I always used scotch tape with no problems.
I doubt it. If I were you though, I would put a piece of rubber hose on the end instead. It seems to work twice as well.

In Viet Nam they always used condoms, just to embarrass that ladies in the PX. I would go and buy several for the 1911A1 before going to the boonies.
