Q:
A friend is having problems getting a load to group in a new Howa 1500 .243 Win. He is using IMR 7828 and Winchester primers with 100 gr Hornady Interlock SP's. Says he can't get them to group. I recommended he try another powder. I am going to check his scope and mounts this weekend. Since I don't own a .243 Win, I thought one of you had a favorite powder for that bullet.

I don't think he is at max since he mentioned 2,800 fps MV, but I will check his loads and pull and reweigh. I think he is a pretty good handloader, but you never know. He has not fired any factory stuff in it.

IMR7828 46.0C* 3009 fps 51,100 CUP

interesting?

But I never had any good luck with IMR7828 and never really used it.

OK!
Hear we go!!

My general pick

243 Winchester

100 gr Hornady Interlock SP's.

Cartridge Overall Length 2.630"

IMR 4831
39.2 2733 43,500 CUP 43.0 2947 50,800 CUP

Winchester 760
37.0 2800 44,500 CUP 40.0 2963 50,600 CUP

IMR 4064
33.0 2672 42,200 CUP 36.5 2902 51,100 CUP

IMR 4895

IMR 4350
38.5 2760 43,000 CUP 42.0 2958 50,100 CUP

Thinking of the case and caliber

IMR/Hodgen cross referenced with Lyman data

IMR4350 40.0 to 41.0

I WOULD GO WITH

IMR4350 40.5 gains 2913 fps 50.000 cup

I'm willing to bet THIS should dial it in!

If this load doesn't work, the problem is elsewhere.

Try this little experiment with the scope. First and foremost, make sure the rifle is unloaded or better yet remove to bolt. Bench the rifle as if you were going to shoot it.

Aim at a object that doesn't move, this includes the neighbors dog and cat!

With out disturbing the rifle, wove your head up and down, side to side and all around.

Does the crosshairs move off the point of aim? And if so, problem solved, THE SCOPE! Now you need to recheck that load. I wish I had a dollar for discovering this!

FYI BRO!

IMR4831 38.5, I wouldn't worry about it. But do not and I repeat! DO NOT REDUCE THAT LOAD ANY FURTHER OR YOU MAY GET A DETONATION!

IMR4831 39.0 is minimum load and CCI 200 is a weak primer compared to Federal, Remington and Winchester primers.

WAM, I really don't think it is all the load, IMR7828 is a finicky powder especially in small cases.

Winchester and Federal primers has plenty of ignition for IMR7828. I wouldn't recommend CCI on slow burning powders especially WIN760!

I know this is a silly question but, will the rifle group with other powders and loads? How did he "break in" the new bore? And are we sure the bedding is correct? I would follow Mr Cooper's suggestion and try the winchester 760. It gets the best results in my .243.

I do not think he has tried other powders/loads. That was my first question and he has not. I will check the scope, bedding and bore. I was just fishing for a "favorite" powder to try in case one of aforementioned issues is not the problem.

thx

MntHunter I IMR 4350 in my 243 I'm thinking about trying Varget though, but give the 4350 a try.

Thanks. I have a fair amount of IMR 4350, so I might "loan" him enough to try that instead of buying a whole pound. He is on a tight budget. I have not checked his ammo, just talked to him on the phone. Since I don't have a .243, I did not have any first hand experience to offer. But if it is a scope/bedding problem, I can fix that!

I do know

IMR4350 40.5 gains 2913 fps 50.000 cup

Is the Gold Standard for best accuracy for this case and bullet weight in the 243 Win.

I started getting my best .308 groups with IMR4064. I've tried to use it exclusively for a while. Maybe that would straighten out my current .30-06 grouping.

I have gotten good .308 Win results with Ramshot TAC with 150 gr Speer SP and Win LR primers. Worked up to 1 full grain under Ramshot data max loads. Used a lot of H380 too.
