Q:
How many worldwide manufacturers of 1911 type pistols were in operation in 1971 and how many in 2011? Younger guys can look this one up, older folks should at least know the first part.

I would guess that only Colt made a 1911-type pistol in 1971. Today, there are probably at least as dozen clones in production in factories all around the world.

I would guess that it was only Colt in 1971. I am not sure, but I don't think Kimber was in the game yet. Today, I would guess that there are 24+ makers of 1911s. I can think of 8 off the top of my head, so I am sure there are many more.

Dunno, but I have carried 1911s made by Colt, Singer, and Remington Rand personally in that era.

As near as I can remember Colt was the only maker of 1911s in 1971 unless you consider the similiar Llama and Star versions. Previously 1911 clones or variations were made by Nordberg in Norway and Obregon (sp?)in Mexico (different lockup system). As WAM mentioned during the forties 1911s were made by Singer, Remington-Rand, Ithaca, and others so were still in use well into the eighties. The count today worldwide I believe to be 41 makers, I might have missed a few. By the way Kimber started out manufacturing wonder .22 rimfire rifles, fell into financial diapair, and then was bought out and moved to New York. Sometime later they developed their own 1911s, I believe in the nineties.
