for those hunters who have used a 30-30 lever action or any lever action gun, do you use a scope or just basic iron sights. when hunting whitetailed deer?
to tell you the truth on iron sight and scopes. it doesnt matter it depends on how you practice. practive without a scope then you should be hunting with out it. the nice thing about the scope is that it "brings up in size" honistly i like the thrill of taking it with open sights just because it is harder.
Like MLH, my Winchester Model 94 is also equipped with a Williams receiver sight. I did change the factory bead front sight to an blade, but I'm very pleased with the arrangement. The areas I enjoy are densely vegetated, and I will not likely see a shot beyond 75 yards.
The M94 .32 Spc. is always stock irons, the Marlin 336 .35 Rem is scoped but is irons sometimes, the M99 .300 Savage was always scope, was irons for a while, is now red dot just for kicks.
In any case, pick one or the other, never use those goofy see through scope rings.
My Marlin336 has a red dot 1x I put on it last year. A good deal of rapid reaction (brush gun, yes?) lies in confidence, and I had lost some in the iron sights. The elevation increments are pretty steep and the fact that the sights cover the lower half of the deer's body got me thinking. The red dot fixes both these, and will stand out better on a black bear if I get a chance on one. The 1x gives no magnification, so no loss of view (the other eye stays open).
I have a marlin .32 spcl it has a 3x9 with raised mounts to allow use of iron sites. I use both. Depends on how the situation is. It is def a brush gun but will take a accurate shot to 100 easily. Here Never had more than 25 yds. I sight it in for 50.
I have a 3x9 scope on my Marlin 336 from Cabela's that is matched to the trajectory of the Hornady LeverEvolution ammo. I took a deer at about 125 yards with it the year before last. The rounds seem to extend the effective range of the 30-30 cartridge.
I use the 30-30 for relatively close shots in heavy brush and timber. I use the iron sights because they give me the widest field of view in the timber for a quick shot. I can get the sights on them faster that way. I also like the sleek light weight rifle for maneuverability in the brush... the rifle catches more brush with a scope on it and slows me down. To me, the beauty of the 30-30 is its usability in brush.

Depends on WHERE you are hunting, If your out in the open a Scope, in the thick brush iron sights!
I like just using iron sights. if you can get close enough to use irons it makes it that much more rewarding.
I like using both so I mount a scope on mounts I can still use the iron sights for close shots.
I only use iron sights on my 30 30 and have no problem hitting out to 100 yrds. On longer shots I'll take my 270 WSM with Leupold scope.

I have a Williams peep (aperture) sight mounted to my M94. Surprisingly fast and accurate.
I used a 30-30 for a few years with open sights and couldnt hit the broad side of a barn. i would use some type of scope

Iron all the way. Generally these are brush guns and you wouldn't want a scope on one anyway.
I used a scope. I used one last year and got 2 deer with it.
On "dad's" ol' .30-30 it was iron ! Had a buddy that had a scope on a Marlin though.
my lever wears a peep sight

Iron sights only on my 30-30. Had a red dot on my Puma 92 lever gun, now I'm back to iron sights on it.
I used open sights for the my first hunt, but where I hunt it just wasn't practical not to use a scope.
