Q:
I stepped into a local gunshop (The Gun Broker on 13500 SW Pacific Highway, Tigard, OR 97223) and saw four (4) Savage Model 99 lever actions in .300 Savage with rotary magazines on their used gun rack! I wish one of them was a .250, but I am mustering my resources to purchase one of these reasonably priced rifles before they all disappear! There are older 99s in the quartet, two are scope-mounted, one may be a bit used & bruised. I can't buy all of them, but I'd want to share that information with whoever may have an FFL on this forum.

The little old cowboy I worked with in a gun shop when I was a kid had four of those 99s. They were older models not the new crap Savage was making at the time. Included a 22 Hi Power, 22-250, .243 and .308. When he died the cougar he was dating swiped them. Darn shame! I'm pretty sure the first two were take-down models. Man, would I like to have those today!

The last couple of years I have seen a large number of Savage 99s for sale in a local shop. Mostly .300 and .303 Savage. Normal prices are running $350 - $650. The occasional .250-3000 in good shape wAS over $1,000.

They were $400 to $600, all chambered for the .300 Savage. I've seen one from time to time, but four used Savage 99s? I've not seen that before!

WA Mtnhunter,
There are two Gun Brokers (east and west) in this area; this is the Gunbroker East and the phone number is (503) 657-7203. If these are still on the rack when my tax refund arrives, I believe I'll scoop one of them up!
Years ago, I made the mistake of selling a Savage Model 99 in .250...I'd love to see that one again!

Thanks Ed J

I have a 99 in .300 Savage in fair to good condition that shoots well. I was just curious.

Buy the one in best shape right now. You'll never regret the cost. Shoot them if you can. Accuracy varies from so-so to better than you thought was possible from a lever gun.

Both my 99's shoot well. The .358 seems to group most handloads and factory ammo pretty well, but shoots each load to a very different point of impact. I'm going to try some 130 grain handloads in the .300 Savage. It shoots factory 150's just fine. Neither has a scope.

WAM,
I'm fortunate to have 2 of the 99's my Pop had. One is the venerable .300 and the other is a .250, both of them in good/very good condition. Ed, buy the one you want, forget the others, just make yourself happy and buy the damned thing!
