Question by ARhunter. Uploaded on July 25, 2010
The compromise was a fine choice. Great firearm!
What model of the 700 did you get
You did good, the 7-08 is fine for whitetails if you use softpoints.
Bloggers know I'm an '06 guy but the 7mm penetrates well.
Them is all good choices for deer.
I'm jealous. I'd love to have the Rem. 700 in 7mm-08. I have a model 700 in 7mm Rem. Mag and a Savage 11 in 7mm-08 and would like to have your compromise. Never had a Weatherby, but sure wouldn't turn one down. I think you'll really like the gun you have.
Your going to really like the 7mm-08. My brother in law has a ton of fine rifles and his go to gun is his Rem. 700 in 7mm-08. Great choice!
An excellent compromise, but to answer your question directly, your first choice would have been just a little bit better.
You made a good personal choice. Enjoy it and forget who was right.
Thankyou. And j4 the model 700 adl.
I love my 700. Good luck this season.
Who bought it for who?
Reminds me of all those Husbands who buy a gun for their Wife for Christmas then windup using it themselves! LOL!
I have enjoyed my M-700 ADL .308 over the years. It is a 1966 year of manufacture and for a good many years it was my only deer and elk rifle. Never missed anything that I shot at. It has been the back up rifle on many hunts. Maybe I'll hunt the late season with it this year.
Mr cooper i bought it for myself. saved up
In your hunter's heart, you know you made a choice; compromise? I think not. I would be torn myself listening to Dad...we were the best of friends, he and I.
You will be lucky if these are the kind of compromises you have to make! For deer sized game I don't think there is a better round than the 7mm-08. I also think that the 700 is a slightly better rifle than the Vanguard. When I bought my first 700 ADL it took 100 hours of labor at my weekend and afterschool job to buy it in 1969. How many hours did it take for you to earn the money to buy your 700?
Super great choice. the 7mm/08 is a fine round with
Hornady 7mm/08 139gr-sst-Lt mag = Flop~Bang.
I have a Rem-M7 7mm/08 great gun.
I see no compromise here, you did well IMHO.
not a bad choice, I prefer the vangaurd, but I'm highly biased, prejudice, and scrutinil of guns. Most people call me weird or rock headed... either works. The gun will kill deer, so I guess that's all that really matters to most.
The only question I have is; whose money were you spending?
Yes, a father's opinion should be respected, but it is, in most cases, an opinion.
If he was paying for it, I could see how that would carry more weight. But when I started buying my own rifles with my own money, it came down to what I thought felt better for me.
I personally wouldn't have bought a rifle I wanted less just because someone else told me to.
congrats ar hunter. let me tel you a story about the 7mm o8. i just finished hunters ed just in time for deer season and i did not have a rifle yet so my dad called his friend who gave me the same gun and caliber to use. on opening day my dad and i were sitting in the treestand for a couple hours when all of sudden a nice 8 point buck and a good size doe came in. i calculated that the buck was at 100 yards and then shot him and he didn't even take a step and just dropped. then the doe just started running and by then she was at 200 yards and running, so i exhaled and squeezed the trigger and what do you know, she dropped the second i shot her. so you my friend have a wonderful gun and cartridge. happy huntin.J4
Jeff4066. It was 100% my money. I just didnt want to dissapoint him in getting something he thought would be bad for me. Jwallen. I don't know how many hours but it was mowing and some people gave me some money for my birthday 2 yrs ago.
Good choice, what makes you happy is what counts.
i'm pretty sure your dad was looking out for your best interests but in the end it comes down to three things; your money, your firearm, your choice. you made a good one but i think you would have done well with any of them.
To tell you the truth, 7mm-08 is the finest rifle I have ever shot. I am 57 years old, and have shot every rifle you can imagine. My greatest love was the 7mm mag with a break. I bought this 7mm-08 because a friend let me shoot his, and I liked it. You can hand load the 7mm-08 up to 3000 fps with a 140 gr, but i keep mine at about 2950 fps. It kicks little more then a 243, it's light. easy to load for, and cheap to load for. It'll kill anything from a rock chuck to a moose or elk. This year I dropped a 5x5 elk in Nevada at 450 yards with a 140gr. partition bullet that I loaded myself. It was flying at 2700fps. I'm not kidding when I say this is the flattest shooting easiest shooting rifle for big, and medium game i have ever had. You'll love this rifle
