Personally, I would stick with the Marlin, the reviews I've read about Pumas weren't that great. Something about the iron sights being inherently flawed?
I know nothing about Pumas, a little about Marlins, which are very well made. One thing about the .45-70 in the guide gun platform tho, is that it KICKS with warmer handloads. Friend of mine who is built like Hulk Hogan has one and it beats him around like a rag doll.
If you are thinking of a Cowboy type rifle the Marlin 1895 Cowboy and it 26 inch Octagon barrel is hard to beat. The barrel features traditional Ballard type rifling for better stabilization of the big 45 caliber slugs and a buckhorn type sight.
If you enjoy single-shots (and I do), you may want to consider the Lone Star rifles (www.lonestarrifle.com), the Pedersoli single-shots, or the Remington rolling blocks out of their custom shop. Except for the Pedersoli, a quality Italian import, these are rifles for deep pockets
I think the Marlin 1895 is the better choice for game, but the single-shots are great fun!

My rifle shoots well and is a pleasure to carry.
I second Beekeeper. I've heard great things about the Marlin 1895.
The Marlin 1895 SS with micro-groove rifling.
Consistent 1" groups.
Had a Guide Gun with the deeper rifling, and it couldn't compete.
I bought one today. Marlin 1895GS. Havent shot it yet but I like the way it feels and have heard good things about them.
