I would like to thank Clay Cooper, Edward J Polumbo, and SGA redneck for helping me with my new rifle... from start to finish, you guys have helped immensely, cheers and a few beers to you, sirs!
lol, I ended up with the Tikka heavy barrel, Bushnell 6500 Elite 2.5-16. Bipod, nice sling, in 6.5x55, 5 shot mag. Heavy, but manageable. Taking it out to shoot for the first time tomorrow! and I raise my glass on high, Slante Mhath!
Guys, I scared myself today :D in a good way. .75 inch, repeatable groups at 100 (around there, like 107) yards, 1.5-2 inch groups at 200 (this is all at a steep incline, these are linear distances) and I was hitting a steel plate 4" by 6" with 5 out of 6 shots at 348 (also at a steep incline). The only reason I wasn't hitting all of them is the bloody thing kept turning. That was with the first sixty shots... oh, baby!
factory. Winchester 140 grain cheap ammo :D. However, the new ipod app for ballistics (drops and wind compensation) was very accurate. IE to be dead on at 350 I had to make it 10.9 inches high at 200 yards
fng,
I think the warrantee expired and I occasionally feel like a classic automobile that requires new parts to remain roadworthy, but the prostate cancer was surgically eliminated. For a while, I felt like someone had dropped a chainsaw on my crotch, but I'm bouncing back. I move a bit more deliberately now and some of the wind has gone out of my sails, but I'm thankful to be on this side of the dirt! Thank you for asking.
By the way, that is remarkable performance on factory ammo! Great job with that Tikka! Enjoy every shot you take (and save your brass).
Ed
Glad to hear you're okay, mon ami. If you're ever in the Montana/Alberta district, show up in Calgary. I'm buyin! nah, my dad is even worse. he has the new LeverRevolution, in .30-30, and with his marlin he was hitting that too... still, not bad for a guy who's only fired 3-400 rounds out of a gun, period (my mom was terrified of guns :P). Yeah, if I had the money, I'd buy Norma 140 grain Hornady Spire Points (they say 2700 fps, but it is a modern rifle with better pressure resistance than an 1896 mauser) or 156 Norma Vulcans (around 2600 fps) so it would be good to everything from deer (headshots at 350 yards...) or even elk, moose, or in a pinch a bear... though both me and my gentleman pater would be pumpin rounds of it. As to scopes, I have leupold QD rings, and a milspec picatinny rails (on tikka's website... tikka.fi) so I may get a mil dot 6500 in 4.5-30x50mm... SGA, how well did that work out for you?
its a 1 in 8 twist, so it's great at stabilizing the heavy stuff, 24 inch heavy barrel, weighs in about, ooo... 9 or 10 pounds with scope, bipod, sling and full 5 shot magazine. Bit of beast, so its nice to be strong :) still not a brush gun, though
fng,
I have both 2.5-16 and 4-30 6500's - both mil dot. I have the 4-30 on my AR that's in my avatar pic and the 2.5-16 is on my lefty .375 Ruger African. I may wind up putting it on the AR - I think I like it the best of the two. Both are good scopes though.
thank you, sir! All I wanted was the ability to get a better zoom on targets/animals before I get into shooting it really long distances... plus, I have to be able to compensate quite a bit, the swede drops considerably over range

What did you wind up with? Which optic? I knew you were considering different things. And thanks for the beer. :)
I hope that rifle provides you with great shooting satisfaction and becomes your favorite. I will sip my beer slowly and raise a glass to you!

I hope you had the patients to wait and build up the cash and do it right :) !
Get what you want and be able to grow into it, just don't pay $800.00 for a rifle and spend $29.99 on some scope!
GOOD LUCK SHOOTER!
AND 73'S!

It even has a picatinny rail... nice!
Sounds like you made an outstanding choice.
fng,
Just remember we need a full report on your setup. Sounds like a good 'un!
