Q:
What gun did basketfootball buy? I wanted to let him know that we shot my nephew's browning Xbolt in 7mm/08 this week.4 groups of 3 shots, 12 shots total. 10 shots were .75 or less, we pulled 2 shots that were outside 1.25 inch. .He shot 2 groups so did I. We each had one of the bad shots. These groups were shot while doing the new barrel cleaning routine.Barnes 120gr.TTSX. I was impressed with this gun. 6 rounds were under max and 6 rounds were max from the barnes manual.Early on he wanted to know what caliber to buy since he already had a 30/06 and I told him to look hard at the 25/06. After shooting the 7/08 I have to say for here in the south I think he made a great choice. What do you guys think,25/06 or 7/08? Remember we do not live on the open plains or desert.

The 7mm-08 is a great cartrige for deer hunting. It has less recoil and more speed than its parent cartrige the .308. The 25-06 can be loaded for a LOT more speed and is far superior for longer range shooting, especially at running game. I would choose the 25-06 if I had only one but the 7mm-08 will serve him well.

Congrats on your new gun,he got a Ziess conquest 3.5x10x44. I have the same scope and he was really impressed with it.I got my scope 5 or 6 years ago when they were $500.He was able to get one for 600, they retail for 699.Cabelas is selling the 3x9x40 for 399 that's a great deal.I'll load some more rounds next week and shoot some more.I think it's going to be a real shooter, moa or less if he or we do our part. He's just getting into reloading and I've been helping him with that as well. It's been as much fun as getting a new gun myself (almost!).I hope your able to experience as many hunting memories with your Xbolt as I have with my old Abolt. Let us know what bullet you decide to use in the 25/06.He well be shooting a 120gr.barnes txs for deer and hogs.Good luck.

Basketfootball, I forgot to tell you the new Xbolt has it's own base,so all you will need is the rings and they have to be just for the Xbolt. If their not made for the xbolt they will not fit.

Congrats on your new gun. I hope you have half as much fun with it as I have had with mine. That Leupold will make it a FINE rifle. I would recommend that you shoot some 75g bullets to check out its speed. They will probably be your most accurate bullet and they are awesome on varmints. If you get into reloading, you can shoot it cheap and try a variety of the smaller bullets. The Hornady 75g JHP and the Combined Technology 85g work well for me on varmints up to coyotes at 500 yards or so. The 90g and 100g Barnes TSXs are deadly on deer. Use the 100s in the woods and 90's in the open. The 100g Hornadys are great too. I shoot Hornady 117 round noses in the brush for minimum deflection. The Hornady 117 spire point is one of my most accurate bullets. Get that scope on solid and let us know how she shoots.
