what would you like to have in an area with thicker woods and also open fields over 200 yards out. a red dot sight or a regular rifle scope on a 30-06. lets here what you got?
The red dot does not work as well in long range shooting out to 200 yards. I would suggest a 2-7x, a 3-9x, or a 3.5-10x scope depending on the density of the trees. The 2-7x would be the best if the trees are real thick.
I will not use a red dot for hunting period..Like Dakota Dan said ..great advice....A red dot is great for close quarters combat (refexive fire) but not suited for hunting IMHO...Think about it, most red dots are 4 MOA that is a 4 inch "group" give or take at 100 yds...My 2 dollars worth (inflation) others may have other answers
Fir a 30-06, putting a Red Dot would be short of gaining its full potential due to longer range than the RD can offer. I strongly recommend saving up the extra bucks since season is a 8 months off and go with a Leupold 3x9 and works fantastic in low light conditions. Hunters I knew who hunted black bear over bait said it’s the biggest bang for the buck. 2Poppa got me thinking to think about, if you expect your shooting ability to become better, perhaps a 4-12X maybe better choice to grow into. Something else to remember, a scope is pretty much a one time buy and spending the extra cash is well worth it especially if that once in a lifetime shot presents itself!

Get a 3-9x scope
DakotaMan and hengst are right on 'bout the red dot.
I use a 4-12X which really gets me out to longer distances.

I would go with the regular scope it is too hard to try and keep the dot steady for shooting that far out.
scope 3x9
Go with leupold 2x7 or 3x9-50mm its tops
I would go for a leupold 2-7x30
I use a Nikon Buckmaster in 3 X 9 X 50. I like the light gathering ability of the 50 in the woods. I wouldn't even think about using a red dot.
