The Garand M-1 loads the internal magazine using an 8 round clip that when pushed in trips the bolt release which then slams the bolt forward stripping the top round and chambering it. The novice that didn't get his thumb out of the way in time got it smashed by the closing bolt. M-1 thumb looks a lot like a thumb hit with a hammer. BTW, the distinction between the 8-round m-1 clips and the internal magazine it loads is the reason old farts like me cringe whenever we hear someone refer to a pistol or rifle detachable magazine as a clip. The nomenclature has been mis-named for so long now that even the manufacturers are calling their magazines clips so as to not confuse the customers.
On a M1 garand if your in a hurry and try to push in a clip without also holding back the bolt slide it will pinch the thumb or fingers inserting said clip.
You can hold the bolt handle back with the edge of your right hand while pressing down on the clip with your thumb. Then, when you feel the bolt pushing forward, just rock your hand clockwise so your fingers point up. That gets your thumb out of the way as the bolt travels forward.
Jabbing at the clip with just the thumb is courting disaster.

All accurately (and colorfully) described. I can't add anything, especially to 99explorer's description. The M1 thumb is one of those G.I. rites of initiation, like the pinch of a M1911A1 .45 Auto hammer on the web of the hand, or watching a feathermerchant new guy arm-wrestle with the operating rod of a .50 BMG. It's an experience you encounter once and come away with new respect for the recoil spring of the M1 Garand.
Merry Christmas, one and all!

It's where you push in the clip of ammo and the bolt smashes your thumb.
