You guys advised me not to mess with the Remington 770, so now I have found a savage edge in a .308 win. is this a good caliber for whitetail deer and black bear? Thanks for any advice.
not a thing wrong with a 308 for black bear and deer rifle. savage makes a great product. with a 180 grain sp corelokt you'll be filling your freezer in no time . my dad has killed 1 black bear a moose and countless white tail with remington 700 bdl 308.
Savage is a very good choice. 308 is also a good choice. Never had any problems with the fire power or accuracy in either one. The difference might be in the round I would choose but you will find out when you shoot different rounds which one does the trick for you.Hope you choose to reload yourself so you can dial in the perfect round. Good hunting my friend.
I was hoping to avoid this but I see it is inevitable.

.308 will be my next rifle, I already have a barrel, saving for the action and trigger. I you're going Savage save up for the 110 or one of the other models with the accutrigger. Good luck in your search!
The Edge wouldn't be a terrible choice. The triggers I've set off were heavy and gritty, but I've heard that some aren't that bad. Maybe they fixed the triggers when they changed the name.
.308 is a great choice. I would use 165 grain bullets as an all around choice.
I think I would buy a Weatherby Vanguard or Marlin X7 before I bought a Axis/Edge or 770. Stretch yourself a little and get something worth carrying home. Used Savage 110's are everywhere and usually cheap.
JSG; The 308W is a fine Choice, I hunted with a guide in Canada who hunted with a Savage M/99-308 an has taken over 40 Moose with it, The Savage is a good choice! But as WAM pointed-out there Better brands for almost the same money(+/-).
PS; Look in to the USED gun Markit at pawn shops??
JSG, I can't say enough good about the .308 Winchester for the application you have in mind. I have an old Remington 788 that has accounted for quite a few deer in it's time. It thrives on a load of IMR 4064 and Hornady 150 grain Interlocks. Per your message board question, I'm with WAM, I don't think the Edge is that much better than the 770. I hear lots of good things about the Marlin X7 or most anything from Savave with an accutrigger. For that matter, most anything from Savage is very good these days. Good hunting.
The .308 is great. Save a little mor and get the Savage Model 11 with accutrigger.. You won't regret it.
GM- Grief and Misery - - couldn't help myself.
Like 007, I have a Remington 788 in .308 that's accounted for many deer and pigs. I'm a fan of Barnes bullets and have used various versions of the 150 grain X-bullet with great success in that rifle.
Never buy the bottom end / price point rifles or combo packages. That goes for scopes and rangefinders, too. If you insist on one of the entry level price point rifles, expect some disappointments down the line, either in service or resale. Sort of like buying a Hyundai or Kia instead of a Toyota or Honda.
When I wear out this Chevy, I'm going to buy a Ford. It has lasted way too long and my friends think I'm poor and can't afford a new truck. That way, I can convince the wife that I need a new one more often!
You can say what you want about Fords, but the F-150s are still the most popular work trucks and meat wagons and meet the following criteria-Not an Asian import, not Gov't owned. FX4 4x4 Ecoboost 37k
OK go get the Savage Edge and hang it in the back window of your Ford. Then when your are ready to upgrade both rifle and truck get yourself a Chevy and the Savage 11.
Just kidding about the trucks, it is a silly argument as they are all pretty good these days. I have had both and can't tell much difference. You will notice a big difference between the Edge and one of the better Savages or the Weatherby. If at all possible save up and you will spend less money in the long run. If you are really hard up for dough lots of people say good things about the Marlin XL7(?) as a low cost rifle. Enjoy whatever you get!
Chuckles,
I believe in Texas Sat. 1st place was Kenseth in a Ford, 3rd was Edwards in a Ford, 4th was Biffle in a Ford and 3 other Fords in the top ten. Looks like First on Race Day.
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
I heard they had to extend the TV coverage because they needed directions to the winner's circle.
If you check the record Jack Roush paved the way to victory lane at Texas over the years more than anyone else. His drivers know where victory lane is.
Well as I posted above I have enjoyed the back and forth but your knowledge of racing is far greater than mine. I will have to yield the floor to WAM who seems willing to defend the honor of the Chevy drivers.
Cheers to you sarge01 for the expertise, wisdom and humor you bring to this site and to your classes!
Ditto Chuckles, this was a good discussion for me to avoid as I don't follow Nascar at all. I just know enough about it to pick on a buddy of mine who's a Jeff Gordon fan. I told him last season that Gordon was painting his car pink and had picked up Mary Kaye as a sponsor. He was not amused.
Roger that 007, I meant no offense from any my comments, many people take it very seriously. I have driven all the major brands and they all make good trucks. I do like the Chevy I have now, given the economy I will be driving it for the foreseeable future.
I got into NASCAR when Davy Allison came to WV to hunt with me and we traded hunting between Alabama and WV for a couple of years until he got killed. My wife and I traveled to the races and I ran the second gas can on his Busch car on Saturday when we were at the races. I have never seen a race from the stands always from the pits. When Davy got killed we lost interest for awhile but I had become friends with Dale Jarrett and I started pulling for him. He was one of the finest gentleman in the garage. Believe me alot of them are not and I have been in close contact with most of them. In the later years I started pulling for Carl Edwards. I guess my Dad selling Ford cars for over 30 years may have something to do with me pulling for Fords.

The .308 Win. is an ideal choice for deer and black bear, esp. with the 150-grain bullet.

While the .308 is basically a perfect deer rifle, if I was seeking bear, I would go with a .30-06 as a minimum.
But that's me. I have a severe allergy to being eaten by angry predators, so I would ensure it doesn't happen to the best of my ability.

That is a great round capable of handling any North American Game animal even the big bears in a pinch.
I agree with Sarge and WAM. Spend a few extra dollars and get a Savage model 10 or 11 in that chambering. You will be much happier.
