If you are looking for a size to do both I'd go with 8 shot. For trap 7 1/2 is best because it will carry velocity (and therefore power) better at distance. For skeet shooting I use 9 shot. In theory every shot is only 21 yards away (the distance from you to the clay about the center stake in the field) so you have to worry more about a fast spreading full pattern than velocity at distance.
My cousin shot in the olympics a few years back. And im in training.. I shoot 8 and 9. Buy a box of each. test em out with different chokes. you can shoot 8 for skeet and trap but 9 is better for skeet. with the 8 load you can get out there and touch em. Same with the 7 1/2 give em all a shot.. best of luck
I shoot trap and skeet almost every week in the summer to tune up for hunting season. I want to say that I'm no expert at either, but I routinely average 19 to 20 and occasionally hit 23 on a great day. I use the Federal or Winchester target loads in 7 1/2 or 8 shot, whichever is on sale or available at Wal-mart (cheapest @ 20.97 per 100 pack). I can't really tell the differnce in my performance with one load or the other. But then I'm not training for competition either.

Not bad for trap, I use 8 for both, 9 is best for skeet.
Yes , it's good but like Shane sead , num 8 is better.
thats what i use sometimes but the other times i use 8, both are good enough.
