I think slugs in a properly sighted in gun are preferable. There have been a lot of deer killed with buckshot, and I used buckshot to kill my share of them forty five years ago, but knowing what I know now, I'd choose slugs.
Forgot the "why". Primarily because slugs are more dependable at ranges over thirty-five yards and will give the penetration necessary for a sure and humane kill. The statement by lovetohunt is accurate because many (most) hunters will shoot at deer too far away with buckshot. It's also hard to know just how a load of buckshot will pattern from shot to shot. Generally, lighter buckshot such as #1 will pattern better than heavier shot depending on the gun.
killed 3 deer this week all with slugs, 2 dropped in there tracks and one went about 40 yards. they do some damage. slugs are much more accurate and dependable, especially out of a rifled barrel.
If you know how your shotgun patterns you should never lose a deer when shooting it broadside with buck shot at -the closer the better ranges. If you have your stands set up for bow hunting in thick woods then closing at your season with buckshot could be a closer for that buck that never quite stops, or stays behind brush. Cheers. I only use it for certain stand set ups where over forty yard shots aren't there at all, so for most folks it won't be the right tool for the job.
I use both, depending on the terrain that I am hunting. I've never lost or even had to trail a deer that I had shot with buckshot, but I only use it when shots will be close. Slugs are superior to buckshot since they dramatically increase the effective range of a shotgun.
i would recommend buckshot as the first shell in the chamber for deer drives, or shots under 30 yards
my first deer was with a single shot 12 buckshot, and it dropped right where i shot, 20yrds away, so i would disagree that it only "wounds deer" my experience says otherwise
pick slugs man no questions asked....yes buckshot will kill them inside 30 yards or so say ur stand location is for bow or buckshot use only openings ar inside 30 yards or so but say ur sittn there and the leaves have started to fall off and now there is an opening and a deer steps in it at 50 yards you cant shoot cause you are using buckshot....slugs will kill em inside 30 as well better to be prepared than be kickin yourself cause you had to let one go!
SLUGS SLUGS SLUGS!!!
Good Luck and Good Hunting
After hearing a story of when my grampa used his shotgun for deer hunting in his younger days, I have always went with slugs. "I shot at a monstrous buck from less than 20 yards and it dropped, but only 1 pellet hit it! Too damn close for me... Teach those boys on slugs." I put about a dozen through my .410 that day.
Bad subject..........Old guys that can't shoot prefer buckshot. Guys that can shoot perfer slugs. For 10 foot to 150 yards slugs out perform buckshot on big game ,Varmints and pretty much anything else. Anything past outside edge of 30 yards is a prayer with buckshot if you are really lucky.Like throwing a granade, hope ya hit something
In a dedicated slug gun with appropriate sights, slugs. For a 26" vent rib bird barrel, buckshot, and know your max lethal range.
Rick,
Performance of a projectile is pretty much a mute point if it cannot be reliably directed to the target, and BTW, a shotgun with no sights is more like a hand grenade when shooting a slug.

Slugs, they actually kill deer rather then wound them.

In WV I recommend slugs for deer because buckshot is illegal.
There is a place for buckshot on the battlefield, where it doesn't matter much whether you kill or wound your target.

Slugs because they are more lethlal and less likely to cripple deer (although they sure cripple their share).
