Q:
I bought a used Remington 870 Express today and the side of the Receiver says Remington 870 Express Super Magnum, but the bolt and ejection port are not that of a super magnum because I have a super mag 870 and the bolt has the extended sleeve and a longer ejection port, the bolt and ejection port on this new "super mag" are the same as that of my buddy's 870 mag. Has anyone heard of this? Was there a mistake at the Remington factory for a short while?

And you bought it used? Used parts can be thrown in anywhere in a used gun.

What does the side of the barrel say, that would tell you if it was a barrel chambered for 3 1/2" shells.

My 870 was bought new and says "Express Magnum" on the side, but it is for 2 3/4 and 3' only shells. Mine was bought in 1995 and it's a 20ga. if that makes a difference.

I agree with RES, Check the barrel stamp for shell length details. You can also contact Remington with your serial number handy and have them give check out the specs.

I would send Remington an email to get things checked out. It is possible it was stamped wrong. I've seen a few pictures of Colt 1911s stamped commanders when they have a 5" barrel.

A couple details, the gun was custom poweder coated so I cannot make out the serial number. Second, if someone had just taken a 3" bolt and put it on a supermag gun, there would be a suspicious gap behind the bolt in the ejection port. Third, All new remington 870 barrels can handle 3.5" if put on a super magnum receiver. I guess that is their way of reducing the ammount of barrels they have to stock. I think that pbshooter1217 might have it right. Must be mis-stamped

pbshooter1217 is right, Remington has sent out firearms stamped with the wrong info. One fella bought a Remington 7mm-08 and couldn't hit the side of a barn. Everything said 7mm-08 from box labeling to stamp on the barrel. The barrel was actually a .308 diameter and 7mm-08 reamer was used.

Factual story, I held the rifle in my hands and looked at it. The fella received a humble apology from Remington and a case of 30-06 165 grain for his new Ruger M77 that was loaned then bought while Remington dinked around while season was opening the next weekend. Go figure!
