Get a 12 gauge, a 20 will work on the 16yrd line but if you have a strong cross wind it wont handle as well. If you dont want to get a 12 a full or improved Modified will work it will just be harder if you move back on the line.
In our high school league we shoot at 16 and 19 yards.
Modified choke in a 20 gauge is good for 16 yard targets. Full might be a little better for 19. The most important thing is to train yourself to shoot without hesitation without giving in to the temptation to aim the gun. You'll hit birds better, and you will hit them closer to the house, in better range of your 20 gauge gun.
I've been shooting trap for 3 years now with my high school in Missouri. My primary choke for 16-19 yards is a modified, but i also use a 12 gauge. I've seen guys that use 20ga alot and do just fine. I shoot with a guy that uses a 12ga full choke 1100 and dusts them right out of the box. It depends on how fast you like to shoot and what fits you the best. Good luck
A 20 can be fine...remember that an oz of shot through a 20 shoots just as effectively as an 1 oz of shot through a 12 ga.
I'd use a modified choke twer I. Pattern in your gun should be plenty dense at hitting targets at say 35 yds. using a modified choke. When you shoot, shoot, shoot, and know where to hold your barrel over the house according to what station you are on, you don't move the barrel very far to dust a target.
Hit the patterning board with the loads you will be using. The coach should be able to help you out there .. should any way. I'd bet the modified will do better for you but you never know.
Consider what everybody will tell you then take your Mod., Imp.Mod. and Full ckokes and a few rounds of #8 shot and some cardboard to the range for the truth. Draw a 30" circle on cardboard at 35 yards, which ever choke provides you with even distribution keeping 90% of shot in circle is most likely the choke you should use for 16 yard singles. Always keep an open mind to other alternatives!

90% at 35yds? That sounds very, very high. Sounds like an xtra full turkey choke to me.
And you need lots, and lots of cardboard, and lots of rounds of patterning to get a true picture.
