Q:
someone told me that i can shoot a sabot slug out of a smooth bore shotgun with a extra full screw on choke, without any damage because the slug out of the sabot is smaller than a rifled slug. i wouldnt expect this to be very acurate but is it true?

no, its not true. Sabots are meant to be shot from a rifled barrel.

yes they are meant to be fired from a riffled barrel but would it damage the barrel or the choke?

Foster-type slugs are for smooth barrels. Sabots are for rifled barrels. I also believe if you read any particular Foster-type slug's literature, they typically recommend an Improved Cylinder choke, no tighter than Cylinder.

I don't know the answer to this question, but my understanding is that the sabot comes off after the projectile exits the barrel, so I wouldn't try it.

and if you're really just asking "What would happen if I fired a Sabot out of a smooth barrel with a TIGHT choke?"

.... I don't think I would try that. Just me.

no ones really ansered the question. i just wanted to know because me and some friend were talking and one of them said that you can shoot a sabot slug out of a full or extra full screw in choke without damage to the barrel or choke which is a risk with a normal foster type slug

it sounds like you can use a smooth barrel & Full choke and the Sabot will just rattle down and out, but not be very accurate. You could also use the smooth barrel with a Rifled Choke only and improve that accuracy.

A smooth bore with a rifled choke will bot improve accuracy, it will only cause problems with your choke. As for shooting a slug out of a extra full choke, your going to have a hard time figuring out what end of the scatter gun is more dangerous!

Check with the manufacturer. Generally they will have recommendations for what works best with their firearms.
