Q:
Does the barrel on a shotgun have to have threads in it in order for a choke tube to go into a smooth bore? I have a youth Rossi my mom got me awhile ago and I have no use for it so I may put a choke tube on it and use it for squirrel or chipmunk. The gun has terrible patterning and I need tighter groups.

A gunsmith would have to put threading on the barrel.

You may be able to order a new barrel for it. Have you looked online ?

Yes! Take your weapon to a gunsmith to see if screw in chokes are possible or buy a new barrel with a screw in chokes.

yes you need to have an internally threaded barrel to use a screw in choke you can get a poly choke that goes on the out side of a barrel but by the time you buy that and have it fitted to your rossi it may end up costing you more than the gun did. you might want to think about trading that rossi in for some thing else

chipmunks: never shot one, figuring there is not enough meat and also hard usually using the wrong shot size to have confidence. Do you like eating them?

Yes it does. Adding chokes will probably cost more than the gun. If you like the gun try buying a new barrel with threaded chokes.

One more point - choke threads are not universal. The choke tubes have to match the threads.
