Q:
My buddy just inherited an old Auto 5 from his step dad, and after cleaning it up a little and taking it out to put some rounds through it, we saw that the action kept getting stuck. Every time we fired, the bolt would come back and would stay back, not extracting the round completely. Not exactly sure on what year it was, because we couldn't match the serial number to any we saw on their website list. Any suggestions?

Clean it through and through and if that doesnt work take it to a gunsmith.
As Gerg said. Clean It.
Take the forearm off and clean the powder residue off the shotshell tubing.
Was the shotgun loaded? The action does lock back after the last shot.
a problem with browning (only maker of the A5 as far as I know), they dont like light loads. So that could possibly be it as well. Definitely give it a good clean, take everything apart. and if that doesnt work, try a heavier load
JMO~Are you loading one round at a time?
What loads are you useing low-brass or Hi-brass?
There is a Brass ring on the shell tube clean the
tube and turn that brass ring arouns one side is for field loads the other side is for Hi-brass loads,
#2.check the Extractor tip for damage, clean the action with Break-Kleen Spray(auto parts store) and lube very lighty after cleaning..You did remove the Bbl?..when cleaning it.
What gauge is it? Some old FN A-5's in 16 ga shoot 2 1/2" shells and won't eject 2 3/4" shells.
Is it chambered for 3-inch shells? If so, the rings on the magazine tube need to be repositioned depending on whether you are shooting 3-inch or standard shells. I have an A-5 magnum that works like that, but it's my goose gun, so I just leave the rings in the position for 3-inch shells. You can find a diagram of the ring allignments online.
Look inside the fore-end wood after you remove it from the gun. There should be a diagram in there for the ring placement for either heavy or light loads.
Here's the diagram for changing the ring: http://www.browning.com/customerservice/qna/detail.asp?id=105
I'm guessing the ring is set for heavy loads and you're shooting light ones. Keep the magazine tube clean.
