Anyone own a Remington 870? What is your opinion on it? How much can you pick one up for? Can you change out the chokes? Would this be a good 12ga. for someone new to hunting?
the wingmaster version is the one with the nicer wood, but otherwise if you want a cheaper one get the other versions. the cheaper ones have a the same action
i've owned one for years and it has never let me down. you should also look at the 1187. very good shotgun for less than $500 in most cases. the 870 anyway.
Think there would be a big toss up as to most popular pump shotgun if you consider the Mod 12 Winchester! Now THERE was a pump gun!!!
I own an 870. Bought mine at Wally World some 20 years ago for $187.99! Screw in choke tubes, the whole nine yards. Matte finish on the metal, flat finish on the wood.
It's a good, cheap gun. I've been using one purchased a little over a year ago lately, and I do love it. It's also worth noting that you almost never see them used for less than about $200. They do hold value pretty well, I'd say.
One note, at least on the new ones, is that you should be fanatic about wiping down the exterior, as that one rusts far more readily similarly finished firearms I've used.
They run very smoothly and if you have any problems they are very easy to take a part and fix.
Bubba, my dad has a winchester model 12 and it's an awesome gun love the look of it and how well it works too bad they don't make them anymore.
Another good gun is the mossberg 500. I own one and i prefer it too the 870 which i've also own. Its made in the US and comes in a ton of different options with different barrels, chokes, and stocks. You can even get a 50 cal muzzle loader barrel.
I pick up one of mine for 150 bucks used at kittery trading post.
There is a reason that it is the #1 seller... you just can't beat it for the money. I have a Wingmaster and enjoy it very much. I have gravitated to using it for everything.
ive got to go and say mossberg is better they take recoil better and are cheap 280 buys u a combo 12 ga. with scope recoil pad check mount
bird and deer barrel
I own a 870 I use for deer, duck, goose, & rabbits and you can't beat it for the price. The only thing about them is that they will not cycle winchester ammunition. I have fought mine tooth and nail trying to get rid of all the winchester ammunition I had bought on sale. I finally gave it away and either use remmington or federal without any problems to date.
I own 5 Remington 870's, I use them for everything from goose and duck hunting to deer to turkey. I have certain 870's for certain types of hunting that I do. I have used a 870 since I was 11 and I am 35 now. I love them, they work flawlessly for me and are very accurate and none of them have ever needed to be repaired. I am very happy with them. Where I gun hunt, it is shot gun only. Good luck hunting this year.
I have had one for a few years now and put maybe only like 300 shells through it and only had one problem and that was when I was shooting sporting clays with my dad's uncle (who owns the clays course and has a very very expensive shotgun) and after a shot i went to pump and throw another one in and it wouldn't pump so he took a look at it and got it out by sticking a cleaning rod down the end of the barrel. He said it was weird it was almost like the brass head expanded enough to get stuck so it really wasn't the guns fault. One time during 2nd shotgun season it was raining and freezing on my gun and when the drive was over (i live in iowa) i went to get my shells out and everything was frozen. The pump, safety, everything. I had to breathe on it to thaw it and once i got home i let it thaw, wiped it down and was good to go. Can't go wrong with a Remington
