Everyone has their opinion about this. It is like a Ford vs Chevy debate. Both are good guns, I prefer the 870 but wouldn't hesitate to get a Mossberg 500. Look at them in the store and make a decision based off of that.
i have a mossberg and it shoots just fine...it really pisses me off when remington guys say mossberg sucks but it sure is fun to out shoot them with my gun and rub it in their face
A gun's reputation goes a long way to determining in the mind of the consumer what is the best gun. Many moons ago when I began shotgunning, a Mossberg had the reputation as a very cheap gun, and not anywhere near the quality of a Remington..it was the high and the low. The 500 must have changed that reputation. I have not followed Mossbergs, but I am sure, if you are an older dude they could have the same opinion that I have. A gun's quality can change very fast, especially in today's marketing world.
My dad told me the same thing Sayfu, said that Mossbergs were not known as good guns, but have changed since. All I know is that I own an 870 and used a friends 500 before. Both are great guns and sound choices. It all depends on how the gun "feels" to you.
I'm glad you are happy with your Mossyberg. I hunt with a fair sized group of folks most of the 109 day waterfowl season every year and I see more issues with Mossberg's than I have ever seen with 870's. Remington 870's aren't perfect, but the lack of durability of the Mossberg's is evident to me.
I don't think it is the Mossberg outshooting your buds. It is your shooting skills, if anything. It's pretty easy for me to outshoot the guy working on his shotgun! LOL
You wouldn't be dissapointed either way. I've gotten better groups with slugster slugs and modified choke with my Mossberg than I've ever seen come out of my dad's 870, same for turkey load patterns. I think the number of Remington owners and past reputation lead to the bias than actual quality of either manufacturer now a days, and I've never heard any actual proof outside of preference or isolated instances (on both sides) as to if the Remington is better, let along "how much better". Which ever one a guy has in his gun cabinet is the one he'll defend, which includes me.
My first gun was a mossberg 500, and it did the job as needed. They will work with any type of weather and dirt they come into, but they lack quality. I bought a remington 870 combo for 09/10 deer gun season and after shooting and comparing the quality of the 870 is far superior! The mossberg as mentioned will serve the purpose as needed, but the quality is something to be desired. Don't take my or anyone elses word for it go to your local arms dealer and set them side by side and handle them, the difference is remarkable!
The 870 is the most popular shotgun in history and has sold more than any other. It is relied on by law enforcement and military all around the world. There is a reason. If I had to decide, go with the Remington.
totaloutdoorsman94, while you are correct that the 870 is used by law enforcement, the 500 and its variant the 590 is actually used my American military as the standard pump shotgun.
Really, I would take a Mossberg any day of the week, and the same can be said about Remington.
The only difference that I have ever seen, and also where the price difference is, is in the overall tightness. Mossbergs will tend to have more wobble in their foregrips, and it makes them feel cheaper.
Either way with a good choke, and good loads, you will have a good shotgun. I used an 870 until I was about 19, which was my dad's shotgun. I then bought my own Mossberg 835 and I wouldn't think of using my dad's 870 anymore.
I don't believe that they is a big difference in durability, both have stood the test of time and each has tons of fans and few detractors. I personally like the Remington better because of the way it handles. As a side note virtually all of the hound men who hunt coyote near where I live all swear by the Mossberg 835 for buckshot loads.
i agree with WA Mtnhunter my self poor quality in mossberg shoot guns and thier rifles in my op but its all in what you like.
also PSE as far as rubing it in their face . rember to be a sportsman about it or some old timmer might had you your back side one day skill has as much to do with shooting as the guns quality
No kidding! Remember guys and gals, Uncle Sam buys from the low bidder those items that can pass the specification for the contract as demonstrated by the seller. Police and Marines probably shoot a lot less than our local waterfowlers do over the years. Some of the biggest offenders of good firearms practices are your local police. Many would not know a good weapon if it bit them in tha butt and most just carry what their agency provides. With 22 1/2 years of military service in a variety of fields, I can tell you that the government does not always buy the best of everything. Some of the sorriest equipment I have ever been forced to use was government procured junk. Don't drink too much Kool Aid.
Thank you Bee and WA Mtnhunter, and I don't mean to offend anybody by saying that I would prefer an 870. If you're a mossy turd then thats your preference.
Another personal opinion.. Personal opinions of guns are not nearly as accurate as test studies made on guns. Take a shotgun and fire 100,000 rounds through it, take it apart, and have it analysed by knowledgeable people that can judge the quality of the parts...the labor that went into polishing the parts, and their fit..the quality of the wood if it is wood, is far more accurate than someone saying, "I love my gun, shoots good, and I've had no problems with it." How many Ford owners don't like their Fords?
They're both great, it's just personal preference. I have 870s, but not because I think they're better, just because I found a couple with exactly the features I wanted on them.
I don't know much about the 500, but I do know that the 870 is a great and reliable gun. I have an 870 made in 1967 that has gone through much abuse and has not failed on me ONCE!! Im not saying that the 500 is a bad gun, like i said, i just personally don't know much about it. But the 870 is an amazing gun.
I actually just posted about problems I've been having with my 870. Some people say they work great, but I've had nothing but problems with mine. Literally, right out of the box, first time shooting it, I didn't get through more than 4 shots before it failed to feed (not from short stroking either). I did research to see if other people had the problems I was, which I found none but I did find countless other problems regarding failure to feed, and failure to extract. Personally, it will take a long time for me to regain any confidence in Remington. Actually, I may not buy another Remington product again... Ever.

i would go with the 870 but like jason said it is opinion
I use a moss. 500 mag. 20ga. with a 22in. barrel i put on it to shoot in heavy brush and woods and it works like a charm on quails and rabbits.
I also like it because it has a thumb safety so it's good for left handed shooters.

Cops and Marines use Mossbergs so obviously both are solid guns.
Shane,
They also buy them on bid... my local boys tote 870's!
My Sheriff regards the Mossy Turds (Thanks WMH) as junk.
Buy the 870! Millions served and still at work...
