Well since you put duck in there it would have to be a shotgun (unless you want to shoot ducks with a rifle) I would say an autoloading shotgun would have less recoil than a pump action I haven't shot tons of autoloaders but I do enjoy my Remington 11-87 and the recoil isn't that bad. and you could add a pistol grip but if your'e hunting ducks I wouldn't like to have a pistol grip but I guess thats your choice. If you get a chance ask some friends or family members who own shotguns to shoot whatever they have and see how you like it. Good huntin!
a 20 ga could probably kill ducks but i know they will turkeys and deer with slugs you could buy a gun with interchangable barrels like a thompson center. i sometimes deer hunt with a remington 870 with a slug barrel and it has some pretty good recoil and the same with turkey loads
A quality gas autoloader seems to be what you are looking for. All three species often call for heavy loads though not necessarily 3inch loads. Though not always light carrying, a auto can be shot alot without getting pounded.Because you mentioned ducks, I recommend a 12 gauge the most. The choices for loads for a 12 gauge (lead, steel, slugs, light, heavy, target, poppers for training a gun dog) cannot be measured and can be found everywhere all the time. Don't overlook a good used shotgun and have fun looking and comparing, I always have.
I have a Weatherby SA08 autoloader 12 ga. and I like it real well. The recoil is rather light. It would be fine for everything that you want to hunt. The only thing I don't know about is if they make a pistol grip stock for it. You would have to research that. Other than that the firearm is a fine shotgun.
It would seem to me that you need to be able to swap out the barrel (because of what you want to hunt with it), and I don't see why you couldn't do what you want with a Rem 870 or Mossberg 500, both pumps, and both have a million ways to customize each. You can use 2 3/4" and 3" shells in either. Doubt you need a supermag (3 1/2" shells) but it's available.
If you want a semi-auto, I'd still look at a Rem 11-87 (what I use) because again, many many parts and ways to customize barrel length, stocks etc.
What I'd do; Pick up an 870. Get a short barrel for turkey and deer (shoot rifled slug shells for deer without a rifled barrel), get a pistol grip stock for turkey hunting, and get keep the 26" or 28" stock barrel for ducks.
You can never go wrong with a remington 1100 or 1187 now the 1100s are higher end guns but still great gun. They have a tiny bit of extra weight that helps to absorb kick and the gas system helps a lot. Remington also has a sur fire stock or something like that which is the pistol grip type deal.
