Q:
Best 1911 for under $1k - if you had $1,000 to spend on a new 1911 which one would you buy? You can include customizations in this, for example, buying the new Ruger 1911 and then customizing it - provided that the base gun price and customization are less than $1,000 total.

I reckon I'd probably get a springfield (assuming they haven't sent the work to Turkey). I like the SIG, but buying a non US made 1911 just ain't right.
I think the Springfield Armory Mil-Spec 1911A1 model would be a good starting point at about $700.
One of the major gun magazines just tested the Springfield Range Officer and claimed it was one of the most accurate 1911s they'd ever tested.
kimber custom II...would also have night sights installed.
Kimber certainly knows how to make a nice looking gun - I have never shot one though
I'd buy an RIA and save the rest to buy ammo.
I've looked at the RIA products a bit. They're a bit rough in finish but seem to be solidly built. What's the rest of you think of them?
I'd probably get another Kimber. Hard to beat at any price in terms of accuracy. Very pleased with mine.
I have been driving alot of nails with my S&W 1911. That thing is rock solid. Second choice Springfield.
Taurus has a nice looking 1911. I have heard the are fairly reliable.
I'll keep my Kimber custom target II. I am 100% satisfied with it.
I have a Springfield G.I. model 1911A1 that it the most reliable semi-auto pistol I have ever shot. Loose fitting like the original, but no stoppages.
I like the RIA, it will shoot ant think I put in it even Hornaday Personal Defense.
anything* geeze and Hornady.
To the Kimber posters above: Are you telling us your Customs were less than $1,000 new?
Look at an actual Colt 1911.
Head over to 1911forum.com to get more info on virtually every maker.
I have been told that the Auto Ordnance 1911 is prone to stoppages with anything other than ball ammo. This would probably be correctable with a little tweaking.
Proverbs... I've seen Custom IIs in the $750 on up range. Mine was less many years ago. All the Kimbers shoot,it is just a matter of accessories and how much external decoration you want to pay for.
proverbs...just got a kimber custom II....i think it was 800 something, to have the gun shipped off and get night sights was an extra hundred...granted me and my dad use gander mountain credit cards so we build up alot of money there, but it was still under a grand without the certificates i believe.
I would like to try the ruger sr1911 then buy more mags for it. but otherwise i would buy a sig or springfield if i could find em for under $1000
