Q:
HUNT NW COLORADO? Anyone hunt the first or second rifle season in NW Colorado? We did and game was considerably scarcer than in years past. It was also much warmer than previos years. We only had a 50% success rate on elk - all cows - and 2 out of 3 got deer. What say you?

I was hoping your hunt would go well but it sounds like it didn't go as well as you'd like it to have.

My buddy just got back from NW CO. He didn't see an animal.

I was a guide there(Colo) for a few years and my best guess would have to be the "warm" weather you had keep the animals "up the hill" till the bad stuff moves them down to where you were hunting.
Sorry about your "bad" luck.

Yep, the weather was extremely warm and sunny all week and the weeks before, too. I think from all reports they were still up about Yellow Jacket Pass and up high in the Flat Tops. Plus the opener was on the 17th this year instead of the 23rd or so. Glad I didn't buy a NR deer tag either! Saw a few decent bucks, but none worth of a ride to town. We took a few animals to the processor in Craig and there were few animals and the "NO WAITING" light was on. There were a few nice mulie racks awaiting pickup though. Came from way up high.

Along about Tuesday, I decided it would be a good bull or go home empty handed anyway!

There is always next year! That's why we call it hunting and not harvesting! We had a great time with old friends and some new friends. No one got hurt or trashed any gear and everyone got home safely, so all went well in the big scheme of things.

We saw lots of game, we got two bulls,(Dad's was real nice) I got a bear, and coyote and still have a late season cow tag I'm planning on filling. Didn't draw deer tags this year. Finding game was not a problem, finding them not in a hell hole was. WIsh things would have gone better for you.

I got back from hunting the first elk season in Meeker. I saw tons of elk and mule deer they were all over down by the town. even were i hunt there were to herds of two hundered elk. it was amazing but it was a hike up and down the hills to get them. when it is hot and sunny the elk hide in the dark timber high up in the mountains. We ended shooting two cow elk because the bulls ran to private land. depressing if you hunt public land
