Bear hunting in WI last weekend, yes I caved in and brought a non-resident lincences, anyways 9 bear since weds. 525 lbs and 442 is the biggest so far.
where were you hunting. i know it was a while ago but i went and saw nothing the 12 days i sat and only ever had 3 bear come in at light during season. if you get this any tips on how to bring them in during light for next time
Where you hunt? Well we finsh the season with 23 bears. We hunt over bait and hounds. For baiting the key is the time of day when you place the bait. Try your hardest to bait about an hour before day light everyday. This way you are trying to convince the bear to come to the bait during day light hours. Make sure you do it about the same time everyday. Don't go back in the eve and bait it again only once a day. Remember mornings not eves.
i hunt in tomahawk about 30 minutes or so south of minoqua. we bait but usually in late morning around 10ish and we dont hunt go to the stand till like 2 or 3. how do you get 23 bear tags though. where i hunt we have to wait 8 years or more for a single tag. you must have a large party you hunt with? what do you use for bait? my friends dad works for hostess so we get twinkies and stuff like that but i heard granola works good?
We do have a good size group. There is about 20-25 of us that usally the main group. I know about the waiting period thats the same thruogh out the state. The reason we had this many tags is because alot comes from somebody who has a tag that knows one of the group members. or somebody knows somebody that knows one of us. Could be one of our cousin friend knows a friend that has a tag. and so on if thats makes sense. Every family members in the group draws for a tag, so we usally end up between 15-20 tags a year. Also if some hunter was not having any luck hunting by themselves call us for a last hope of harvesting a bear.
Anyways if I were you bait early than that. We usally try to get sweets and granola. We usally hunt with hounds but we did get a few over bait in fact the 525 was over bait. Remember to be scent free cause the bears nose is unbeliveieble. Also if you have a game camera put it up over the bait and keep track of the times and date. Example this one nice bear comes in a 1030 every other day.
oh i see, yea i dont have any hounds to use and tried to get in on a bear run but the other people that have hounds still had tags left so i couldnt get in on a run. we put a camera up over the bait and had pictures of a couple dfferent bear each night but hardly ever in the day. well ill have to try to get out and bait a bit earlier in the day from now on. do you know anything about doing like honey burns, i dont really know much just heard a little bit about them. i guess you start a small fire with pine branches then put a bag of honey on it or something?
