That pocket just behind and below the shoulder on a broadside shot will usually take out the heart. A bit higher will take both lungs. A shoulder hit will take it down but ruin an awful lot of meat in the process. I'm a meat hunter of antlerless elk so I try for vitals whenever I can.

On large animals like Elk the boiler room is always the way to go.

if i'm shooting at a bull and want to keep him from going far, the shoulder. cow tag to fill, just behind the shoulder.

225 grain .338 TSX? Break the shoulder. I think your bullet could do it but not as reliably. Vitals are the best bet with any rifle.
