I would tend to agree with the .30 caliber reccommendation. What kind of terrain will you be hunting? Do the hogs come out into fields? Will you be digging them out of the brush? A .30-06 would do fine, and a .35 Rem. would be great in the brush. I have killed a couple of truckloads of them with my .270 at close to moderate range.
I've killed most of my hogs with 270 and 30-30. I dont see a problem with using a round as small as a 243 as long as you can make a good double lung/heart shot. Never shoot a hog iin the shoulder or head, these places on thier bodies are way too tough and will make a pig a little upset and anybody nearby is going to take the brunt of the pigs temper.
I think that probably the best hog rifle will be the 338 Federal that just came out last year. I have one and have shot deer with it. I shoot 200 grain Hornady interlock bullets in it and it is super accurate , managable recoil and a ton of knockdown. I have hunted hogs in Alabama and I don't know of any other rifle that I would rather have. I have some 225 grain Hornady interlock bullets and I wouldn't hestitate using them also. If you are not familiar with the caliber it is a 308 case necked up to 33 caliber.
I do like the idea of a .45-70 on a pig. Lots of knock down power but saves almost all the meat. If you just want to kill them an not eat them, use a .30-06.
Good luck on your hunt. Let us know what you use and how it goes.
I have been doing a lot of thinking about how to describe my 338 Federal and the best I can come up with is a 308 on a very healthy dose of steriods shooting a sizeable chunk of lead. I think the cartridge is here to stay.

I have a feeling your gonna get some answers saying "whatever rifle you shoot best"
But anything you would use on deer will work great on hogs. Id go something in th .30 range incase one charges or somethin.

I would think that a lever action 30-30 would be just about ideal for this type of shooting. I assume that the range will be close.
Just remember that some of those critters can weigh over 500 pounds. The .30-06 is not too much gun.
well a parently anything with a trigger. just kiddin a 30 cal of some sort i would go with a 30 30

Anything you would use on a wolverine!!! sorry I couldn't resist. I would use a .30 caliber or a .270 or a .45-70
50 cal BMG...kills the pig and butchers the meat all in 1 shot!
Marlin .45-70.
Thanks for the advice. Pretty funny comments you guys made me laugh

My personal preference would be 30-30 Marlin Lever Action..Great advice from everyone answer above!!!
Well I just looked at what I typed. The 06 will not ruin much meat. Sorry I don't know what I was thinking.
30/30 or 30-06 is my choice
44Mag, in pump,lever,auto,300gr Hornady JHP/XTP.
I'd use my 270

I personally use several calibers..Including .270, .308, 444, .44mag, and 30-06...But my favorite is my .270!
