Q:
Hey guys, after 12 years I finally drew a Maine moose tag. It's a cow only tag but I'm very excited. I'll be shooting .338 win mag. I believe Mr. Petzal is fond of the 250gr loading for this round. Because it's probably a once or twice in a lifetime hunt for me, I'm going with premium ammo. Does anyone have a favorite brand and load? Just looking for ideas. Thanks, Dan

The best "Bang Flop" on a Bullwinkle was with a 30-06 with over the counter 180 grain Remington soft points!

Any 250 grain out of a 338 will do, pretty good size chunk of lead!!!

My favorite load for my 338 Win Mag is the Hornady 225 Soft Point. Dropped my Moose like Thor's Hammer and serious overkill on Caribou!!!

By the way, for Alaska Residents you will find the 338 Win Mag to be the #1 choice!

Congrats on the Maine moose permit. I've been puttin in for a few years for a bull tag. Unsuccessfully.

For off the shelf ammo, I'd take a look at federals vital shok loads. they use the barnes tsx bullets which are da bomb.

federal premium with nickel cases. accurate ammo for only around 2.50$ a round.

My .338 has never fired a factory round but regarding handloads I suggest 210, 225, or 250 gr. premium bullets although an average old Sierra Gameking 250 will work just fine. I do however prefer Barnes or Swift Sciroccos and am looking forward to receiving some of the new Bergers. Generally moose is a fairly close range proposition so extreme bullet accuracy is not paramount, just reliable performance.

Ish, just watch out in the .338 department with those Bergers. They aren't as structurally sound as we were lead to believe. Out of anything faster than an edge/LAPUA, suck as the .338 LAPUA Improved or the .338 extreme, the bullet actually deforms in the barrel due to excessive force. Berger is working on a solution, just letting you know.
