Q:
Attn: folks in MOUNDS, OK area. Two different people had three horses killed by MOUNTAIN LIONS last night. One owner caught & killed 2 of these cats in his barn. Several other lions were howling in the trees nearby after word. Word is the fed govt let some out in KS & OK recently & some killed elsewhere had GPS trackers in their ears. And the game agents even showed up asking for their 'equipment' (GPS) back but would not admit thrived released the animals. Also, they demolished a chicken coup at 231st & US 75 and ate EVERYTHING but the feathers. The horses were killed 3 miles north at 201st & US 75. My partner Jack saw one crossing our farm about 10 miles SW of Mounds recently, too. NICE FOR THOSE DAM FEDS TO TELL US WHAT THEY ARE RELEASING!!!!! Be safe out there and always carry a gun.

Good luck with those horrible beasts, when you have a predator that weighs 160 Lbs that can take down an animal that weighs 1500 Lbs you will have problems, much like a wolf. All I can say is good luck.

Call it whatever you want, but the mountain lions are here, we made a trip to check on my cattle tonight and there were indeed several big cat tracks in the little 2 track that winds through my property. I don't really care if they were released or not, if my cows start disappearing, there's gonna be some late nights this week.

Gumby, you would be suprised what the federal government does without your permission.

I agree with Gumby. This is just too far fetched to be true. If the cats were released it was probably from some rich idiot's private zoo.

Several years back, I heard a guy excitedly talking about he and his wife seeing a cougar on the WMA just east of town.
His statement?
"Yep, I know why they are here, too! The "state" brought 'em in to help cut down on the deer population!"
I laughed to myself just how incredibly inane "that" statement was. With the deer herd here what it is, and no measures to keep 'cats from crossing the borders from adjoining states, well, it was only natural that they would eventually make it here. Geez, it's a "rich" feeding ground for a predator that size!
Telling a "respected" community member about the statement, I said, "Isn't THAT crazy?"
He looked at me and grinned. Then he said, "I was there when Game officials released THREE mating pairs in Horse Creek* bottom!"
I HAVE NOT seen one or evidence of them! Are they here? There is no reason, realistically, for them to NOT be here. I've just not seen evidence!

I've spent quite a bit of time along Rio Rojo. There is NOTHING to keep lions from crossing the border! Same for New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Arkansas or Louisiana! Truly, I have no doubt they ARE here. I just haven't had the priviledge of seeing one yet!

I do believe there are transient mountain lions in Oklahoma, particularly in the very tip of the panhandle and along the Red River. I just have a hard time swallowing that "the feds" released them.
Do you mean the ODWC or the federal government?

It's been a couple of years since the conversation gumby, but it seems he didn't point fingers but insinuated it was state.
Now, there is some credibility to the first part that the lions had been released to "...cut down on the deer population...". The deer population is pretty big right now, but there are acres and acres of wheat pasture planted each year, so there are food sources galore.
I just don't see that puma's are a way or the way to make any appreciable cuts to the current deer population.

It wouldn't supprise me if they did release them, but I would find it a lot more believable that the cats migrated there looking for food. I've heard they have a hudge range that they normally travel then with the drought in Texas area they may have just walked outside their normal area. In any case good luck and wish the familys the best.

I live in OKC and a friend deliveres papers on the north side of the city by a lake and he shows me pic's he took with his cell phone of mountain lions while he's on his paper route. He see's them 2-3 times a month on average. He says it's been like that for a few years now. He doesn't even get excited when he see's them anymore.

Are the cats there? Heck yes. Did any state or federal agency release them? Heck no.

That rumor never goes away. When I lived in NY, people would claim that the state released rattlesnakes and coyotes. The timber rattlers have always been around, and the coyotes have been populating the east more and more for decades. No releases. All conspiracy theories.

Just because they were collared doesn't mean they were released. State game agencies dart and collar all sorts of animals.

Native animals will come and go where they please, even if they've been absent from your area for a while. They know no borders or laws. All you can do is get used to it and shoot them when they intend on causing harm to you or your property.

Like I said earlier, I don't care if they were released or not, I see 'em harassing my cattle, somethings gonna die. There haven't been any more kills since but one mountain lion got hit by a car on HWY 75 east of Mounds. I have personally talked to a game warden and he said that they have released Cougars in the past decade but in very small numbers and few in between.

Thanks for the info "micneador". I to live in OK, not so far from you. Just west of hwy. 64 north of Warner. I hunt the Dirty Creek area alot. I've heard alot of reports, over the last few years, of cougar sightings in several areas of the state. After awhile, you have to think that there MUST be some credibility to these stories. I've also heard the "rumors" of the ODWC releases as well. Makes me think; we do have an awful lot of hogs in the state, and they are a problem. The area I hunt is absolutely torn up from hogs rooting and I have killed several this past year while patrolling my area. I wonder if the ODWC is actually trying to control the hogs. Seems like they would be alot easier for a cat to catch than a deer, and a hell of alot of them. Just a thought though. I haven't seen a cat myself...yet. Good luck !
