I suppose you could. I use #4 buckshot on coyotes and have had good luck with them, not one dog has gotten away from that gun. I also don't worry about the pelt.
It does not take a high caliber or gauge of gun to take down a coyote. I have heard of hunters who use .22's to kill them. Then ask yourself if a 12 gauge slug would kill one. It would probably ruin part of the pelt as well.
JMO~ A shotgun is fine with #4Buck on SongDogs if your not saving the Pelt, If you have a slug Bbl. for that Gun use slugs. I Hunted with an old boy for years who had one Gun a Browning A-5 he hunted every thing Ducks W/30" Full,Birds 28"Mod, Deer 20"slug Bbl
I prefer 3" #4 buck too. A slug will sure do the job and gives you about 75 yards of range vs 50 for buckshot. Since a slug has very little shocking power, they will run off if you don't hit them in a vital area. They are tough. Also, you may have running shots within 40 yards and the buckshot gives you a larger pattern. With a call, you usually get them within buckshot range. I've done quite a few drives too where they will break out of a timber following a fence row or ditch to get them in range.
The best is a rifle of .223 or larger if you can do that so you have more range.
I use the same load as I turkey hunt and has worked well for me. Not as expensive either as those dead coyote shells. I would say a slug would be pretty harsh on the pelt.

you can use just about anything on coyotes. I bet it'd tear up the hide pretty good. Just depends on what type of slug I guess

Like other said the hide will probly be tore up. I like to use OO buck when I hunt coyotes.
You can but if your going to use a slug why not just use a rifle. Won't tear up the hide as bad and let you reach out there a farther.

What can you not use on a coyote.

A slug will definitely take 'em down, but OO buck would be a better choice because there is more margin for error at close range.
