From what I've heard that should do the trick. That may be too big for the gazelle. That being said the .30-06 is your best bet if you are bringing just one gun. A gazelle can never be too dead. I'd also suggest you talk with your outfitter to see what they recommend in terms of caliber. What country will you be in?

That should be fine, but you might want to consider something like a 300 win mag for kudo. Plus it's nice to have an excuse for a knew rifle.

never been to Africa but i would assume the shots on game lick kudu would be longer shots so a 30-06 should work fine

What Bullet do you plan to use?

Good choice. 180 grain Barnes TSX for everything. Don't mess with using a lighter load for the smaller stuff. Take one load big enough for everything and it will kill everything if you do your job.

Before you go, maybe have a GOOD gunsmith give your shootin' iron a good going over and blessing. My dad took a trip with a new gun that made it exactly TWO rounds before it failed. Luckily, the outfitter had a loaner. The failure of the new, pretty, and sort-of expensive gun was a real letdown for him.

Also, If you have optics, maybe have a plan B in case something bad and unexpected happens to it/them. Get a good gun case (I like Pelicans and the nicest of the SKB's) that has TSA locks on it. Also maybe take a look at the post from a while back about the 'emergency rifle repair kit'. And if you wisely take Shane's advice, get plenty of that same ammo that you are going to take and practice with it until MOP is totally second nature to you.

Shane beat me to it, as usual. For South African hunting your 30 06 is just fine. The Triple Shock 180's work great. They don't ruin capes as badly as the smaller 165's on the smaller animals and will take care of your Kudu in fine style. The Gemsbuck will be your toughest animal, shoot it carefully and not too high, a common error on this great trophy.

Don't try to re invent the wheel at this late date by getting a 300 Win Mag since you are used to the 06. I use a 300, but have killed over two hundred animals with it, so it is an old friend (on it's second barrel). I find it kills better at long ranges on Central Asian sheep.

Stick with your 06 and you will be a happy camper

I missed Sgaredneck's earlier comment on guncases. As he says, don't waste money here, get the best you can. His Pelican choice is excellent. The Americase all aluminium number is also good. I own at least 10 high quality cases and am always ready to consider a better one if it appears.

Love Africa, and have hunted in most all huntable countries many times. If you have other questions don't hesitate to ask.

I was in Namibia a year ago and took Kudu, Gemsbuk, and Zebra all with one shot each from a .270 Winchester. The Gemsbuk was the toughest. It ran over 100 yards with a solid hit through both lungs. The others dropped almost in their tracks. The 30/06 will do the job as long as you shoot it well and you place your bullets correctly. Use a premium bullet and remeber that you should place your shot a little lower and more forward than you would for deer here. Have fun and post pictures.

A 30-06 will kill anything in North Amaerica so unless it's an elephant, a hippo or a buffalo I don't think it should be a problem. That sounds like a lot of fun!
