I don't hunt coyote but here's my take if I was to start hunting and had no one to give me advice. Shoot several in the lungs and several in the head, and then gauge with one puts the coyote down faster. That should help you decide for yourself which shot placement to take.
I use #2 size leg traps with four coil springs for coyotes. When they are in a leg trap they get pretty mad and face you down so I dispatch with a shot from a 22 lr hollow point at very close range head on to the eye area. I also use the same type shot with the 22 lr hollow points to dispatch feral hogs in a box style trap. Death is instant in both cases so the animal does not go through any more suffering than is necessary. Note: I would never try to approach a wild animal in a trap without first looking the situation over and studing it to make sure of my own safty.
I would only go for the lung shot with a larger round. Head shot is the best way to go with a .22lr. The eye is the best place to aim if shooting from the front. From the back aim for the base of the skull where the spine connects.
I have found that animals caught in a trap will not stay still long enough for a precisely-placed head shot.
It once took all six shots from my revolver to finish off a raccoon with a head shot from less than two feet away.
@treestand yes I am. I was told be a trapper that he uses the same method, shot through the ear. @99explorer some animals react differently, ive had still, calm coons, and coons ready to attack. lol, thanks for all the advice.
Take it to the head, although the chest is a bigger target it could create a longer death. everytime I have trapped them, just like santa said, they turn and are mad and face you down. it gives you time to sight in the head for a quick end.
Never shot a coyote. But may have to soon. Have seen a few in my area ranging in size 60-75lbs. The size of a good German Shepard. All my training I've been told to ' Aim center mass ' so I would go with that. The ones I have seen have no fear of humans.
And commonly come within 20 yards. I will be using .22 and .25cal barrels on my Airforce Tallon SS. I've been told that the Predator Polymag pellets in either caliber. Are drop em down one shot lethal. 20 yards@1300fps+and 64db would do the trick.
Now I'm sure that folks on here would disagree about using an air rifle.
I assure you of the lethality of this air rifle. It's not even remotely a plinking toy.

Usually in the chest. It is rare that they are real close and real still for a head shot.
@bigbass yeah ill have to try that. @dakotaman theyll be pretty close cause im trapping them, so i shouldnt have a problem with that
Are you trapping for the hide?
I would Shoot for the ear-canal or the lower part of the skull-to-neck for a fast kill.

An old 'yote trapper told me all he used were .22 shorts at point blank right between the eyes and an inch high.

we shoot'em with rifles, .223, .243, even a .25wssm, in the chest, even if it is only a decent shot will stop'em dead.
Rifle 'em in the chest. You have a bigger target if you do in the chest area.
