I'm going bear hunting for the first time this year and was wondering if a .270 would do the job.

I assume you are referring to black bear hunting. The .270 is more than up to the task of taking a black bear. The 150 grain slug might be your best choice although the 130 or 140 will do it.

I would think so. I dont think there is much that a .270 cant take care of

yeah that would work fine, if you use the appropriate bullet weight and a good bullet style

A .270 win will do just fine for black bears. i use it and I use 130 gr federal Fusions and i used 140 grain federal bear claws and they worked just fine.

I've seen a good size bear taken with a .270. I'm not sure of it's wieght, if I remember correctly, it was about 250lbs or somewhere around there. So yes the .270 is plenty good for bear.

Federal loads Trophy Bonded and Nosler Partition 150 grains. Try one of those.

For sure. It doesn't matter what load you use, I have personally shot 3 bears with a .270 and witnessed others kill bears with this gun.

Very versatile cartridge. Good for any of the game in the lower 48. Black Bear will be no problem if you can shoot well. Good hunting.

A .22 will kill ANY bear if shot placment is correct.
I'm not a .270 man myself but I'd say all the boy's are correct in their thinking.
+ 1's for all.
Good Luck, Good Hunting and TAKE PICS !

Folks have the black bear covered. For Browns or Grizzly's I don't think I would want to be in the woods with anything less than a .300 win mag. I want plenty of gun when the animal I'm hunting could be hunting me at anytime.

.270's are great all round guns. Bagged my bear this year with my .270. Stopped him in his tracks. Just do the usual preparation, go to the range, spend some time making sure your shooting where your aiming. Good luck, and Good Hunting.

I just bought a .270 Marlin XL7 for $280 at Acadamy Sports, using 150 Grain Bulets will easily kill a black bear, will it kill a Grizzly bear though.
