I have successfully used two of the three on many elk with no problems, 30-06, and 300 Win Mag. I give the edge to the 300, but only if you can handle the increase in recoil. I use the 168 grain Federal Triple Shock in the 06 and the 180 Federal TSX in the 300. If someone showed up in my elk camp with a 308, it would not bother me a bit. Know a delightful lady elk hunter that uses only a 308 and never seem to have a any issue getting her elk.
Jokingly, someone indicated she could shoot, but could she field dress an elk? I am sure she could, but being beautiful, why should she. There were always plenty of fools standing in line to help her out.
Any of the three will get the job done, I would give a slight edge to the '06 for versatility, and more punch than the .308, less recoil than the .300 Mag.
I prefer to transfer as much kinetic energy as possible. Not trying to kick an antbed that has been annihilated here in the past couple of weeks, or doubting anybody's shooting ability, nobody around here would shoot at an Elk with anything less than a .30-06. Military ammo is popular, and many own both a .308 and a .30-06, and I have owned both. But My next rifle will be a T/C Encore. They are very accurate and durable and allow you to experiment. There are aftermarket barrelmakers for this as well. I will revisit some calibers that I have already owned, including but not limited to .30-378 Weatherby and .375H.
Mark this question either "yes" or if it is multiple choice then D. All of the Above. They all will get the job done. My preference would be the .30-06.
All three use the .308 round, BUT the 06' IS more readily available if you forget/lose/airline's your ammo.
The .300 just gives you more distance.
Good Luck and Good Hunting.
(By the way Mr. Myles, she does'nt have to be beautiful. As a "Southern Gentelman" it is my DUTY to help the lil' lady out !) lol.
a 308 inside 300 yards would definately get the job done. a 30-06 doesn't offer much that the 308 doesn't, about 100 fps more velocity is all. if you want to shoot further than 300, a 300 win mag would be my caliber of choice.
i would never take a shot with a 30-06 that i would not take with a 308. the difference is minute.
in my opinion, the 300 win mag is the biggest 30 caliber anybody should need. recoil is not as bad a people make it out to be. 300RUMs and 30-378's are a little rediculous to me.
If I want to shoot farther than my 30-06 or need more down the brown, I'll get out my 338 Win Mag!
Want to see the difference between a 300 Mag and a 338 Win Mag? Pop a jackrabbit with each one, 300 Mag blows the guts and fur all over the place while the 338 Win Mag blows it to smithereens sending pieces parts everywhere and the hide goes flying thru the air! I shot amany criters with the 300 Win Mag I had, in no way does it compare to my 338!
If you are hunting for purely elk, I would go with the 300 mag (if you can 100% handle it). I hunt for Mule Deer and Elk at the same time, so I opt for the 30-06. There is no need for versatility if you don't need it.
You can't go wrong with the ol'-06 but the .300 gives you a little more velocity with heavier bullets, if you're hunting the great wide open. Bullet placement is key and any of the 3 will do well if you place your bullet well.

I have taken elk with all three, I've taken a cow at 412 yards with the .308 win and it dropped her in her tracks. I have shot the most elk with my .30/06 and it has never let me down, and you can't go wrong with a .300 win. mag. They'll all take elk just fine if you put the bullet where it needs to be.
I would use the 30-06 or the 300 win mag. My wife hunts elk with the 30-06 and I hunt elk with the 300 both guns have plenty of knock down power. If you are planning on taking long shots I would go with the 300. But if you plan to shoot within 350 yards the 30-06 is plenty.

I'd go with a .30-06. Its a very useful cartridge all around.

All those will work. A 308 round in the lungs is better than a 300 win. in the gut or leg. Use the one you can shoot the best.
What is that Clay likes to say? It's the indi'n not the arrer.

If a 30 cal can knock it down and you need case bigger than 30-06, chances are you will be flinching and anticipate the shot so bad you will miss!

I love the 06 and killed an elk with one but would use the .300 next time. They are tough animals and the more power the better.
