How many of you wear snake proof chaps or gaiters when hunting in an area with a higher population of rattlesnakes? I'm contemplating if I should buy a pair.
The ones I have are extremely uncomfortable. So much so that I don't bother, I just wear high ankle leather boots and tell myself they are snake proof. Or you could wear sandals knowing that:
[According to government statistics, three out of every four snakebite victims are between 19 and 30 years old. 98% of victims are male. 40% of bites occur to people that admit they were playing with the snake and since 64% of bites are in the hands or fingers, maybe even more people were playing with them. In addition, 40% of snakebite victims are legally drunk.]
Interesting stuff, most bites are given upon request. Same article says 9 to 15 people die out of 8000 venomous snake bites in america, you'll live but you still don't want to get bit.
I have a pair I wear boar hunting in Texas. They are fine because there isn't a lot of walking involved. I know they are hot to wear. I wouldn't hunt that area witthout them though.
I dont wear any at all. just have high top boots but not even super high top boots. I live in AZ and spend alot of time in the desert walking around and I never have had a problem with snakes. but then again I dont crawl around with a blind fold on. maybe if I was going around at night i might get a pair.
I have worn gaiters made of nylon cordura in the high desert, and I found them a bit inconvenient. I normally wear 8 or 10-inch leather boots with laces or, if I'm covering a shorter distance, western boots. I consider it unlikely a rattler strike will hit higher than these boots if I remain vigilant.
I have never worn snake chaps. I have been in areas where rattlesnakes are a daily occurence, and other places where they are rarely, if ever, seen. The only time I have ever had one actually strike at me, the snake was on a rock ledge and the chaps wouldn't have helped if he had hit me anyway.
I live in South Texas where Diamondbacks are plentiful. I always where my snake boots when Im doing alot of walking anywhere. I also pay attention to where Im stepping. Most people get bit when they startle a snake. Better to be safe then sorry.
i often hunt in southern AZ where there is a huge snake pop in rugged country. i never leave the car with out my chaps on. they have saved my life 4 times in 3 years that i can think of.

I always wear chaps during the early bear seasons.
I don't have chaps but I wear rocky rattlesnake boots. They are the best summer boots ive ever owned. I can walk all day without a problem.
