Goldens are not pointing dogs. They were not bred to point.
i know they are not bred to point but that doesn't mean they can't be taught. i've seen plenty of goldens and labs while out bird huntin that pointed.
most likely going to be quite a challenge seeing as the breeds not known for pointing and being 5 years old is a litte late to start training. Not saying its impossible, just going to take a lot of work.
I maintain that, if your dog is smart enough you can do it. This is because I trained my Lab (without trying) to point at age 4 1/2 by training him with pointers and setters. Dogs are real big on monkey see, monkey do. Back in the early days, bird dogs were bred in with Labs, even in the finest lines. If you look online, you will even see "Pointing Labs" advertised. Bill decided to point as a setter. Arms apart, head up, tail up. He's great. But he is otherwise a genius as well. I have seen Goldens at hunt tests who appear to be very good.
