Q:
WV fall turkey season opened Saturday, and I just saw a headline that a hunter was killed on opening morning by the stray rifle bullet of another member of his camp. Apparently the hunter shot at and missed a turkey when the victim was on a roadway below and was struck. It's being attributed to fog, brush, and rain. Just another lesson to always know what's beyond your target, prayers to the family.

TO TRUE !
GOD bless and keep both of their familys.
We had an accidental shooting on a lease we used to hunt(few years back).
Guys shooting at a hog and hit a guy in the head in his truck. Second one on that lease.
Now you know why we don't hunt there any more !
How do you know for certain what's beyond your target when fog, brush and rain combine to prevent seeing as far as your bullet will travel?
By not shooting when rain/fog/brush obscure whatever's behind your target.

if you saying its not the shooters fualt becuase he didnt know what was behind his target he should not have made the shot
I saw this too on WSAZ news. It is always horrible to lose a fellow sportsman.
u can shoot turkeys with a rifle in WV that seems kind of like overkill and with bird shot i think this could of been avoided. My condolences go out to the families of both the hunters...
Thoughts and prayers to the family, and yes, to the person who pulled the trigger, as that life will also be forever changed. I too turkey hunt with a scoped rifle and have yet to see a man that looks like a bird, or vice versa. I heard it said by a wise man that as most rifles are scoped today, hunting accidents, with the POSSIBLE exception of the case in question here since I don't know details, should be treated as a homocide and investigated accordingly.
never heard of shooting turkeys with a scoped rifle. not sure how i feel about that.
So sorry to hear of this trajedy. Let it be a wake up call for us all this season to be EXTRA careful before pulling the trigger... if it is foggy, dark or we can't tell what is behind our rifle shot, just wait... This is too sad to bear and it is up to each of us to do his/her part.
A tragic accident. When I was a boy a neighbor got his head blown off at the end of a dove hunt. A fast ride to the hospital in his son's new 1954 Corvette didn't help, as his brains were still scattered over the cornfield. Please be careful not to kill your close friends and family!
