Here in the south i found thats the best way to take a fall turkey is to break up the flock then sit down and start calling with a kee-kee-run they just about come right back every time as far as calls i use alot of mouth calls to produce this sound my favorite is a double split reed but its all in what your comfortable
with and what works best for you. good luck and happy hunting!!!

you can definitely call a lost bird or a pair maybe, that you never broke up yourself by calling. Done it. Have had them come up just hearing me in the leaves, hoping it's their flock. The young ones are really desperate to get back to that flock.

>a kee-kee-run

personally, I like to keep that in reserve, it can be dandy tho.

I'm in full agreement with turk on this one. Except for the mature gobblers, turkeys have a very strong flocking instinct in the fall and respond readily to Kee-kees, yelps and clucks after being scattered. The trick is to make sure they are well scattered and haven't just flown off in the same direction, in which case they will get back together quickly without involving the hunter in the process except to give him a nice calling seminar. Mature gobblers are another story. Their flocking instinct isn't strong and they seldom answer calls, either in person or vocally. Good luck to you and remember that no matter what the outcome, turkey hunting is like a big bowl of chocolate ice cream---it's all good.

Agree with comments so far. You can also call birds to as they fly down in the morning.
I have called & killed many fall gobblers with the fighting purr. In the fall they are establishing their pecking order and respond quite well.

Agreed with the concensus, kee-kee runs, with a few yelps and purrs thrown in.

I like to wait for a rainy day and check the open fields. Seems like turkeys get spooked by the rain and come out where they can see what's around them. Often you can sneak to the edge of the woods and get off a shot. The other thing to look for is corn fields that have been harvested early. Especially if part of the field was left standing. Makes a great spot for bushwacking a gobbler at first light. Just use the standing corn for cover and sneak closer if necessary.
