Q:
debating whether or not to take advantage of MI early goose season this weekend. its been so hot these past few days the birds dont seem to be moving at all, people i talked to that hunted yesterday and today say they didnt see a thing. if a rain storm or cold front comes through by sunday i may head out. obviously you cant kill one if you dont go, but is it worth hunting geese in this heat?

it's worth hunting anytime you can get out as long as your dog doesn't get beaten down by the heat.
If the feed is there they should be moving no matter if it is terrible hot or not. The problem with this early season is that none of the fields are cut yet so they'll still be hitting the golf courses or staying on the water and feeding there. That's not the kind of stuff they need to get fattened up but if there's nothing in the grain fields for them, then they have to go with what's available. I'm in the same boat here. Season opened yesterday but no sense in hitting the fields because no harvesting yet. Weather is warm here but not as bad as many places that's for sure. We had a nasty thunder storm briefly this morning. Not much relief in that.
We have a Canada Goose season here for "resident" birds. Of course if a goose is HERE in this heat, it would have to be a "resident" bird.
As it is, dove season opened yesterday on a 107 degree day. Today hit 105! Plenty birds, plenty heat! I ain't goin' out there!

OHH, last year early season we did pretty good, birds flying all over the place, i didnt really pay much attention to see if the fields had been cut at this point last year though. it was cooler last year this first weekend in september, not sure if thats the reason or not but it seems to be the only factor that has differed.
What I hate about killing geese in this heat is disposing (Sp?) of the caracasses after I clean them. I kill on Saturday and the garbage truck does not run till Thursday, they can get pretty ripe.
Yeah, too bad they don't make ziplock bags big enough to take a whole carcass. I only bone mine so that leaves a LOT of stuff for the garbage truck. I will likely not start hunting till Tuesday or Wednesday even though the season is already open. Will go for a drive on Monday and check with some of the farmers. It's a religious community and they don't like to be bothered on Sundays and I can respect that. I am seeing quite a few honkers moving around town right now so I expect I may get some shooting if I can find a field that's been cut. Even alfalfa might get something coming in if no grain in yet. No one usually cuts silage corn until after first frost and that is quite a ways down the road I think. Hurry up and wait! Arrrgh!
A couple of farmers out where I hunt have refuse piles of crap cleaned from the dairy barns or corrals and they have told me to toss carcasses in the heap. Nice folks.
no bird movement today at all OHH, everyone in know that has hunted now for 3 days in a row hasnt seen a thing. birds just arent flying.
Wonder what they are eating? Have they been hitting the golf courses? If there's no honkers on the golf course then they must have moved out of Dodge! Or Flint or wherever it is you're located.
just played golf today actually....there were plenty on the course i was at..........and im in between flint and detroit, now the two most dangerous cities in the states and im smack dab between them lol
