a very complicated question these days because of non-toxic shot. Pick the non-toxic you are using and find a chart somewhere to help you with your load.

I had to double-check to see what I have been using lately, which is Hevi-shot. As opposed to steel, you can pick the load that you used to use with lead and get good results. I believe I have it right that this is generally the case with non-toxic that is not steel. I get 3 inch #6 "high brass" I choose by looking at the shells, but on their chart that is probably the higher velocity ones. You can also buy B, #2, or #4, but for ducks I would only consider #4 as an alternative myself. ~~~~ see chart http://www.hevishot.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=21&...

2 3/4 in #3 1 1/4 oz. Very good on decoying ducks and geese. If you know your range its a killer load. Drylock, rem or federal.

I use 3 inch shells and it seems to knock them down fairly easy when there within 45 yards. The shells are called winchester experts and i would suggest them to any hunter for geese or ducks.
