Q:
I have good news and bad news. The good news is I got a spring turkey tag! The bad news is I have no turkey hunting expirence, except for watching people doing it on t.v. So I guess my question is for you to give me some basic info on turkey hunting. By the way I will be useing a bow.

I'm a novice turkey hunter myself. I love just getting out there and calling, sometimes they come!

Starting off your turkey hunting career using a bow is going to be really tough. They are hard enough to kill with a gun. There have been quite a few recent posts on turkey hunting and I'd suggest you use the search feature at the top of the page to check them out. Actually steve182 pretty well summed it up, "---just getting out there and calling, sometimes they come."

first off, if u are going to be bow hunting you will want to set your weight where it is not very hard to pull back and you can pull it back slowly because turkeys have eyes like crazy....secondly, its about time to start scouting here in indiana so my method for scouting is to go down into the woods right before sunlighht and just sit and listen to the birds...whichh ever direstion they are gobbling from i sneekly try to find out where there roost is (but not in the same day) and thats where i know to set my blind up at...also if someone tells you to use a locator call dont do it because i think it scares more birds off than its does bring them in...thirdly, your going to want a good call of course, so if i were you i would go with a friction/slate call...they are easy to use and sound like the real deal (i suggest you to get the "primos power crystal")...you will probably want decoys to because those r always great to have (you can get them for a reasonable price about anywhere)...4thly, if you have a food plot for deer and it has clover in it, it will probably work good for turkeys cause turkeys like clover to...last but not least, your broadhead selection, your deer set up will work for turkeys but if you have rage 2 blades thats great because they are oustanding on about any animal there is....well hopefully ive filled u in on some info and i would like to welcome you to the turkey world, GOOD LUCK!

I was thinking that too country road. But I would rather hunt with a bow anyday over a gun. Plus I can get more range with my bow then I shot gun.

If you have a blind then you might want to bring that with you so you can get away with your draw easier because turkies have great eyes. I recomend the primos calls good luck.

I recomend starting out with a shotgun, even turkey hunting with a shotgun can be hard. also the guys on tv dont just go out and shoot a turkey. take time in the woods before turkey season, get used to calling and study turkey behavior. have fun and good luck.
