Im sure that a .410 slug would do the job between 20 and 40 yards. But a 20 gauge slug might do a little better or 16 or 12 with 1 Buck buckshot if you want some real takedown power. But like i said a .410 slug will do fine up to around 40 yards. Good Luck Hunting!

The 3 inch slug out of the .410 will do a good job on a deer at 50 yards. The thing is, my son had a hard time getting a consistant sight picture with the single bead on the little mossberg pump of his.
here in iowa it is illegal to use a .410 to hunt deer i think they have the cut off at 28 gauge but im not shure but iowa tends to have some weird laws so it is probaly legal in most states
I get to use my friends Mossberg 500 .410 when we go to the range & I love that gun. While I understand how NY state seems to think its not a large enough caliber to humanely take a deer, I'd like to think that if you're a responsible hunter then you know not to take a shot you aren't sure will be a kill shot. But The laws are the laws.
