I've shot both, I own the Mossberg 500 and personaly wish I would have spent alittle extra for the Remington 870. It just seemed to be made alittle better. Both are good guns.. both will kill deer. shoot both (if you can) and see wich one fits you best.
Both guns have taken plenty of deer. If I was buying one of the two, it would be the 870, just because I have had some bad experiences with Mossberg, which may or may not be a coincidence.
Either way, if you plan to use a scope, get a cantilever barrel, in addition to being able to switch barrels without resighting the scope, a cantilever will hold your zero better.
Definitely the 870, I shot slugs in a Mosst*rd once and it would not cycle correctly. I was in Alaska in Bear Country and threw it in the Chena River and bought an 870 an hour later.
Take A look at the winchester 1300. I have a mossberg used it for a while then bought the win 1300 with a rifled barrel.. Very affordable and I read an article that compared it to more expensive guns including the 870. To make it short they all were compared to the 1300 and they said for the money the 1300 couldnt be beat.

Mossberg 500 12 or 20 ga. Combo (field & slug barrel)is around $400.00
If you just want filed barrel or sluggun they run about $200 - 300.00
You can get Full, Xtra Full and Improved Cylinder chokes for the field barrel.
Modified choke comes standard on the field barrel or atleast it did on mine 17 yrs ago.
Very Dependable. Has 6 round capabilities if using 2-3/4" shells (5 in tube + 1 in chamber)
Low Recoil(Wood Stock): Can't say the same for Remington 870.
Hope this helps you out.
Remington 870 because Ive seen quite a few mossbergs have some deffects.
Get a bolt action slug gun by savage but i have no idea how much they are.
Thanks. I forgot about Savage making slug guns. I also heard about defects in 500's and a poor safty.
Rem 870 express magnum. A little bit more but once you shoot a 3 1/2 you can feel where the magnum comes from.

i have the 870 combo barrels best all around gun i have ever used i have used the 500 to... Theres a reason they made a million of them
The Rem. 870 comes with a rifled barrel combo and it is less than $400. They are great guns and it will not disapoint.

Remington 870 I have both the slug barrel and the bird shot and i love the way it shoots slugs. I wouldn't buy anything else.
The bolt action Savage would be my choice, but it'll exceed your price-range if you scope it well.
Just bought a new Benelli for $449. Couldn't be happier. Owned an 870 and a Mossberg. No comparison.
