I've done it with the 500-pistol grip and 18.5 in. barrel-wouldn't recommend that setup for slugs, but it was the only thing I had in the truck when I came up on a group of hogs I got one, so accuracy wasn't a factor. Winchester 3" slugs BTW.

Yes, the standard lead foster type slugs should do fine.
Yes but improved cylinder is better.
Go for it. Accuracy may suffer though.
I've done it out of an older 870 and accurracy wasn't terrible. Remington sluggers are pretty accurate and cheap, i've found.
