ok heres my best clay cooper style answer, BOTH, ok. maybe not. Vangaurd gets my vote over the tikka for several reasons. Either will serve you well.

I have had both and right now I own 4 Tikka T 3 Lites so you know what I prefer. The Vanguards I had shot well also but I like the smooth bolt and smooth trigger on the Tikka.

I would ask the gun shop to mount a scope on each rifle and try it out for hold, comfort, balance, and feel. That is the rifle you will shoot the best. Cycle the action at the shoulder and see which one feels the best. Buy the one that fits you best! Both should be good shooters.

WAM has it right as for scopeing a gun just to see if it fits? balance, feel, and cycle the action is all part of the buying game. you have picked a caliber 308Win good pick, now what brand; Tikka T3 is my pick
over the Vanguard, The Tikka is compack lite fast handling and made well. now its up to you to pick?

I've sorta had both - I had a Howa (who makes the Vanguard) and I have a T3 in .270WSM. You couldn't go wrong with either IMO - they are both excellent guns for the $$$. I give a slight nod to the T3 for a better trigger and smoother action. Neither one to me had a great stock but the accuracy on both was very good.

I agree with WAM - see which one fits and feels the best.

I have both (actually 2 vanguards and 1 tikka t3). I like the tikka better: lighter, slimmer stock, smoother action. I don't care for the magazine; would rather have a floor plate.

iloveguns22, I prefer the vangaurd for the following reasons,

1)Balance, I find the balance of the vangaurds slightly better than tikkas
2)Stock fit, I like the monte-carlo cheek piece on the weatherby
3)weight, I like the slightly heavier weight on the Weatherby since it slightly reduces recoil
4)trigger I've found the tikkas trigger to be not quite as good as a vangaurds
5)feeding system, The vangaurd has floor plate, the tikka a detachable magazine, I lose magazines (or clips whichever you prefer, just don't lecture me on which is politically correct, anyone that knows me, know I'm not politically correct)

Now DO NOT THINK I DO NOT LIKE THE TIKKA !!!!!! I do, I'm just very particular when it comes to firearms, the stock on a tikka may fit you better than a vangaurd. You may like a detachable mag. The bolt is a little smoother on a tikka, and tikka do have a rather ingenious scope mounting system. I'd be perfectly happy with either, the vangaurd is preferable the tikka quite acceptable. your Caliber choice is excelent. Go to a gunshop, pick them both up and see which one you prefer, buy good optics, good ammo, shoot a deer, and post pics !!!!
