The .45/70 is mostly used for deer, bears and hogs, but it was THE buffalo gun of choice for most of the "mountain men" of that era.

I've heard they are best suited for close range on big game. Bear from a tree stand or if you're walking through the bush.

The African Big Five. It's been done. So everything. And past 100 yards. Not that you should be shooting past 100 on the big 5, but I wouldn't think twice about taking an elk at 200, or even more with the newer loads in the right rifle.

The good old 45-70 is a whooper that can handle any animal on the North American Continent for sure. Although it is thought of as a timber rifle for big critters like bear and moose, it is pretty effective out over 200 yards for just about anything. Its speed is a little slow coming in around 2,000 fps but it packs a when you hit something with it.
