I would have no problems with a good shooting 20 ga. with rifled slugs on deer but I simply wouldn't use buckshot. I have seen way to many wounded and suffering deer that have been hunting with this stuff to ever recommend it.

I consider 20 gauge buckshot hunting to be deer torturing, not deer huting. They are pretty effective with slugs though.

Any time you drive deer, whether with dogs or people, they will normally be running when you shoot them. If you are going to use that technique, you have to learn to shoot running deer. It is not only possible, thousands of people do it every year. I suggest you practice with moving targets. Start with a .22 shooting at moving targets like wooden disks the size of a pie plate. After you get pretty good at that, try hitting deer sized targets towed way behind a car. You will find that you can aim a rifle just like a shotgun and hit what you are aiming at. Finally, try it with your shotgun and slugs. You will see that you can hit a deer sized target pretty consistently out to 50 yards, maybe 80 yards. A slug is pretty lethal when you hit a deer, even though it is not as lethal as a rifle. The problem with buckshot, is that it can severly cripple deer without killing them and does quite often. There are other techniques that involve more still shots at deer if you aren't accomplished in hitting moving deer.

ill use a slug every now and again not as much as i use buckshot and mi hunting club we drop dont leave them injure and if they do the dogs bring the deer down the hounds do if hes injured enough or they will bay on the deer the whole time into we get to the dogs to kill the deer so only people that cant shoot injure deer and thats why you can shoot five time to make sure u dont injure him

they use dogs here and we use bucksot i have no problem killing a running deer i got 3 deer the past season and all 3 were running 2 of them rolled em up right there the 3rd i shot and dropped her then turned to another to see if i could get a shot and she jumped ran 40 yards i shot again dropped her i like a 12 gauge myself as far as a 20 gauge i know kids 10-13 years old who kill deer on the run with 20 gauge since they run dogs in your area make it easy on yourself hunt the woods stay out of the field when a deer breaks the field it looks like there runnin 90 miles an hour belly inches from the ground a deer cant run as fast in the woods and alot of times you can catch them just slippin threw the woods not only that when your in the woods listen to the dogs alot of times when they pick up the first scent on that old buck and he jumps he will most likely circle around right back to where he was jumped hes trying to throw em off back on the old trail so take the time pattern the gun at many ranges with diffrent shells not just size but brand dont go with with one of those extra full chokes when deer comes by at 10-20 yards the pattern is so tight you better be dead on i have hunted with dogs since i started hunting not by choice but no choice its one of those you better learn real quick not just shooting but still being safe thats the biggest thing be safe

but some people under estimate the power of a 20 gauge

alot of people under estimate the power of buckshot they say it wounds to many deer but you can shoot a deer with a rifle and still not kill it. Its all about shot placement right some people say if a deer is wounded and you don’t find it that’s unacceptable or unethical that’s like say if you are fishing and hook a big fish and the line snaps you’re a bad angler for that or if you are driving down the road and get flat you’re a bad driver for that some things happen that you cant control I will be the first to admit I have shot deer and never found them but like I have said before the swamps down here are unforgiving I have walked in muck chest deep searching for deer and when your chest if you drop in a hole over your head the vegetation on top sucks in around and its like being under ice you aint coming back up that’s a quick way to die I know I have had a few life threating situations in the swamps they aint nothing to play with if I see evidence that a deer hit the swamp im going in after it I will do everything in my power to recover the animal I love hunting but I love myself even more somethings arent worth dieing over

deerhound34---sounds like you already have your mind made up, so why ask?

I would not want to use a 20 ga. with buckshot unless the shot was under 20 yards. Even then, I'd rather use something else.

Dearhound, Use a slug, if you have shot birds at all you should know about leading your target. Deer can be shot while running I have done it.

you may be "accurate" with buckshot, but there is no way that you can be as accurate as using slugs. Just by the odds of it you are more likely to wound a deer using buckshot then a slug. It is true that bad hits do happen, but the fact is: it is the hunters responsibility to minimize the possibilities for a bad hit. I'm always looking for precision within a few inches so there is no way that buckshot would ever be an ethical hunting load. Besides the fact that I cant use it because its illegal in NY.
