I love the pre-rut because you can pattern the deer well and in Idaho thats the only time you get to hunt mule deer so its my favorite.
I like the chasing phase of the rut best. The does aren't quite ready to breed yet, but the bucks are on their feet and moving. It's a phenomenal time to be in the woods.
I call it the "stupid" phase. It's when the bucks are so single mindedly focused on rut they don't even noticed the girl in a tank tops and flip flops in the lawn chair sighting in her rifle. A couple years back a buck chased a doe fifteen feet from me as I was unloading the bed of my truck. Really, like really?
The chase phase. The bucks are up and browsing, so you get a better idea of whats hanging around your area.
I like the early pre-rut, or more specifically that late summer feed to bed pattern. Its so easy.
I would have to agree with Gilltheman. The pre-rut is the easiest time to pattern a deer or a group of deer.
