Q:
While skinning my buck this morn (yea I got a nice lil 8 pointer) I noticed some some funky looking creepy crawlers zipping around in the buck's hair. They look like huge lice, but move suprisingly fast, sliding back between the hair with ease after being disturbed with the point of my knife. I've cleaned a lot of deer and never remember seeing anything like these. Any body know what these alien invaders are?

Are you sure they aren't deer ticks? Watch those things, they can carry some very unpleasant maladies. Congrats on the deer.

I'm thinking dear ticks. They'll crawl all over the place once the body cools down and the blood stops flowing.

I'm betting they are ticks. Surprised that you've never seen them before. Almost every deer I have gutted had a couple between the legs. Shot a monster buck in north Idaho once that was loaded with them. After he'd been hanging by the horns for a couple of hours, his nose and face were covered with em. For some reason they all migrated upward as the carcass cooled. AND YES, DEER TICKS CAN CARRY LYME DISEASE, A TERRIBLE CRIPPLING MALADY. EVERYONE WHO GOES INTO THE WOODS SHOULD KNOW HOW TO LOOK FOR THE TRADEMARK OF AN INFECTED TICK BITE AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. ACTING IMMEDIATELY IS CRITICAL.

The ticks i see on the deer i've shot in Pa. do not look like the ticks i occasionally get on myself. They are a bit creepy looking.

I don't know where you are, but here in southwest Alabama, deer were infested by a very similar sounding parasite when the feral hogs invaded back in the late 80's. Naturally, we called them hog lice. The feral hog population has dropped dramatically over the past few years and so has the incidence of the lice. I don't know about this year since gun season doesn't open until Saturday, but there have been fewer of the things each year. Never had a problem with them, but they are nasty looking specimens.

personally, I would be surprised if an experienced hunter could confuse ticks and lice! Sometimes the lice are pretty big!

Deer lice AKA the Deer Ked. They are as common as ticks on deer in the south and are actually a wingless fly. Check out the link for Derr keds and other nasties on and in deer.

I found the nasty looking critters, they are called Neotropical deer ked or Neotropical deer louse fly. Here are the pics and description.

Not sure what they are, but check yourself, and then shower and check yourself again. The buck I shot in pa a week ago. I let it hand for two days, well when I skinned that deer, every tick that had been on it ended up on me. Found 11 in total on me. So check yourself to make sure you have gotten all the ticks or alien creatures off of you.

Sorry, bama, I was a while getting back to this post. I'm in Clarke County, north of the coastal plain in the hilly part. At least that's where I hunt--I live on the coast.
