Q:
This is a bit of a curiosity question rather than one I'd ever bother losing any sleep over; but the recent "smoking" question made me think of it. Has anyone ever noticed game picking up on the steam/smoke you breath in cold weather? Regardless of your camo/movement, it seems like it could be a big white flag of a living creatures location. Or maybe to segway, what's the biggest step you've taken to mask your smallest "tell"?

I have thought about this also and concluded that wildlife also emit the white puff of hot air when exhaling and while it might get attention, it wont spook them.

I do think about it... I try to get up off the ground or I wear a ski mask if I am going to be somewhere that they can see the breath. I also try to exhale real slow so the breath doesn't make a cloud... I've had some bad luck with that though. Back when I used to wear eye glasses, I had a coyote coming right in to a call and his eyes were locked on me at about 40 yards. I exhaled slowly and the breath went right up my ski mask to my glasses and frosted them over. I couldn't see a thing. That coyote actually came right up and put his nose on my gun barrel. It's always something! I'm just glad that he wasn't one of the killer coyote strain that is going around.

I wonder about that myself, too. If it moves a whitetail sees it. They still have to connect the dots. But if I see him first I stop breathing anyway.

When I see the buck I'm after, I try to take a couple of deep breaths through my mouth and blow out more than I took in.

Then when I'm about to take the shot, I breathe through my nostrils, which seems to reduce the effect of the moisture coming through heavy, excited breathing.
